The first rifle I use to deer hunt with was a 30-06 that I barrowed. For me, I knew that was too big of a gun because it really "tore up" that deer.
The next year I bought a Remington 700 in a .243 cal. and have been shooting it for over 30 years when not bow hunting. If you can make a good shot, the deer will drop or maybe go a few yards. The 100 gr Rimington Cork-Lock is all I ever use.
