Investing in individual Golfers is a failing venture(besides Tiger)

Nick Dunlap's historic win at the AmEx on Sunday drew 534K viewers on Golf Channel, up 37% from Jon Rahm's win last year (391K).
Amateur story line drew more eyes (money) than the 300m man and best player in the world. Besides Tiger, people don’t watch because of an individual. They just aren’t needle movers
Courses, historical events, etc is what brings eyes to golf. It takes someone as massive as Tiger to actually be a needle mover and worth any true guaranteed dollars or investment.

How many people in Spain can watch the Golf Channel?
Meh, Golf is a global sport, but here are numbers of viewers in US

And yet a relatively unknown amateur moved the needle 37%. Make up your mind..

1st, a one time viewership doesn’t mean anything.
2nd There were big names at the top of the leader board
3rd Sam Burns was one of them. 100k could’ve been just LSU fans for all we know

Seems as if you could make this argument about any sport……..

Any single amateur would have caused the same result viewership wise. That’s the point. The golfer doesn’t matter(sans Tiger)

It wouldn’t help their numbers in any material way, yet the chiefs would still get great viewership

Dunlap is now known as the only guy to win the Junior am, the am, and a pga event as an am. He did those things. The story is him. He moved the needle.

You are literally dumber than a sack of rocks.

That's a blessing in disguise. SkySports Golf in Europe carries more live worldwide golf than the Golf Channel would ever dream of covering. The Golf Channel is vested in carrying the PGA's water, as if nothing else exists. In the US you have to have a PGA Tour Live subscription to see what the rest of the world sees with a basic cable subscription.

Unless you think Michael Block was also the story……

Lots of golf fans not paying attention heard about Dunlap shooting 60 and leading. He tied the lowest round for an am.
Pride is basically saying that no one cares about Spieth who was driving a ton of viewership when he went on that tear early in his career without Tiger around. It was just his “story” as if that has nothing to do with him. Tiger drives the needle because of his “story” too if that’s the bar we are setting.
“It’s not Tiger as a player. It’s that he used to be so good and is still chasing Jack.”
What a dumb take.

When Tiger decides to play any single event, viewing numbers soar
No other golfer does that. Period
Add Tiger to the Zurich, watch what happens. Nobody else will come remotely close to the results in viewership. He is the only needle mover in golf

You’re a goddamn walking contradiction
Your argument is that they didn’t tune into to see this crazy good am who is about to accomplish something no one else has done… it’s that they tuned in to watch this am do something no one else has done.

People watched to see an amateur win. They didn’t care it was nick Dunlap.
Tiger woods is the only golfer where he himself moves numbers
Not Spieth, not Rory, Tiger.

By your definition it’s just Tigers story that moves the needle. He has the best story yes? It’s entertainment. Tiger himself means nothing to the viewer. It’s his history and what he can do next. You can’t say it’s this way for this player but not for this other one. Rory moves it some. Rickie being in contention again has moved it. Scheffler can move it. Rahm can move it. Tiger does move it most. Thats not some crazy epiphany. But it’s all because of their history and “story” as you put it. And it still makes them valuable to sponsors. Dunlap is valuable. His story makes it so. But that goes for everyone and especially Tiger.

I am saying nobody is close to being worth any material value besides Tiger. No golfer is worth millions in guaranteed dollars besides Tiger. It’s why guaranteed large contracts paid out by an entity isn’t a viable product for golf
Giving any golfer a guaranteed contract worth millions thinking it’s going to produce actual return is insane from a product viewership/attendance return. They aren’t money makers by their own brand. Only Tiger, as an individual, is a golfer whose brand is worth millions just to play golf tournaments from a contract perspective

If Jon Rahms actual value was millions in guaranteed money, viewership numbers should plummet in an event he played last year that he didn’t this year. That would show worth
