The 64-year-old Sandberg said Monday in a release put out by the Baseball Hall of Fame that he has started treatment.
“I am surrounded by my loving wife Margaret, our incredibly supportive family, the best medical care team, and our dear friends,” Sandberg said. “We will continue to be positive, strong, and fight to beat this. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time for me and my family.”

Wish Rhino all the best and hope he beats it. Loved watching him play, and my very first Sports video game was Ryne Sandberg Super Bases Loaded.

Seems like most men around that age are destined to get it.

Definitely wish him the best and will be praying. Was diagnosed with prostate cancer myself and was blessed that it was addressed before it metastasized. The doc told me after the surgery that the cancer was about to start spreading and if I had waited a few more months, we would have been having a different conversation.

If caught early very treatable

It's kind of ridiculous that society - even MENS sports - go all in on breast cancer awareness but you rarely hear anything about prostate cancer, which, like most cancers can be successfully treated if detected early through proactive testing and screening.

Damn that’s terrible. Best of luck to him…

I remember when Ryan Sandberg signed the highest paid contract in MLB back in 1992. $30.5 million for 5 years.

If I was gonna get any cancer it would be that.

There’s some prostate cancer that a gentleman may develops later in life and he will ultimately die of some other form of chronic condition without ever receiving cancer treatments. Then there are some forms where it ain’t pretty. There’s controversy on whether or not PSA screening is appropriate. There can be false positives that lead to anxiety and biopsy’s that are painful and unnecessary. There’s also a strong genetic link to prostate cancer especially African American men. Do some research.
If you have a family history then get screened early. If you don’t have a strong family history around age 50 start getting screened. Look up U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) PSA recommendations.

I was in the room with my dad post op when his urologist told him something similar. Thanks to early detection, my dad lived another 21 years post op, 19 of those without any chemo or radiation. In the end early detection was the difference between him dying as a young man vs dying as an old man. Prayers for Ryno. Doesn't even seem possible he is mid 60s.

My urologist said almost every single man on Earth, if he lived long enough, would get prostate cancer. Key is monitoring and early detection.
