Happy 94th Birthday to Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin...

Air Force pilot, Korean War veteran, astronaut, and the second man to walk on the moon.

He first flew into space on November 11, 1966, aboard Gemini XII, the last flight of the Gemini program. Together with command pilot Jim Lovell, the pair of astronauts spent four days in earth orbit where Aldrin himself conducted a series of space walks. Using modified bungee cords and handrails he designed himself, Aldrin became the first human being to successfully work and perform complex tasks in the vacuum of outer space.

His work on the flight of Gemini XII would guarantee his selection to the first lunar landing mission two years later as Lunar Module pilot of Apollo 11. Together with Neil Armstrong, he helped pilot the lunar module Eagle successfully to the surface of the moon and watched from inside the LEM as Armstrong became the first human being to set foot on another world. Several minutes later, Aldrin would himself set foot on the lunar surface and enter his name into the history books as the second man to walk on the moon.
