re: The whole women in power movement in movies. Let me tell you the truth.

Ripley should be the model for female characters in action movies. Instead, there is this need to downgrade and/or replace men. I'm sorry, but unless you are a superhero, a well trained 120 lbs female is still going to get her arse handed to her by a 180 lbs Joe.
The example I always use is from high school. We had a student who was state powerlifting champion for girls heavyweight. She was a good 200 lbs. She worked out with the football team because none of the other girls could keep up with her. When she came in, she would work with the weakest group of players, backup DBs and such.

Posters like the woman from Kentucky will change it to we hate women, or we're triggered by seeing a strong woman, or we're so consumed by politics. Is it too much to ask to have a strong woman lead actually act like a woman?
I’m simply asking you to hold the same energy for men in similar situations. If you take that as me saying you hate women, that’s on you.
Why is the bar a woman has to be realistic in strength/ability to what a woman would be off the screen but we can suspend that belief for men in action movies (since that was OP’s example) who survive really ridiculous scenarios.

quote:Like what? I don't really watch superhero movies? Plus that wasn't even the point I was making. Again, the issue is the only way female leads are portrayed as strong is to give them masculine traits. Strength doesn't always have to mean physically strong. Women and men are different and women have things they're better at and men have things they are better at. You've been brainwashed into thinking feminine = weak.

Just about every action movie that has had absurd explosions, stunts, etc. that the character would not have survived IRL. Which is, well, most action movies made these days. Not superhero, but action.
MI movies. Bourne. Bond. Every Fast and Furious movie. Kingsman. And on and on.
I have no problem suspending the belief that those men (and women) surviving those scenarios wouldn’t in real life. They’re not documentaries or historically accurate depictions. They’re fictional action movies.
If little Tom Cruise can kick all of that arse (and I’ve met him IRL, he’s small) then I don’t see why suspending that same belief for a woman is tearing down society. And how puny is our society if it is.

Or I can utilize some critical thinking.

Because those guys are badasses. The women do crazy shite in Fast and Furious as well, but its less believable, because boobs.

Tom Cruise is an American treasure and I will not tolerate Cruise slander here.

read it more as the closet is closing in on him and he’s getting claustrophobic. No one lashes out about girls not being men on MTV board prior to noon on a random Thursday unless they’re struggling with some serious inner turmoil.
There’s also the dangle of this angle.

Most people aren’t at all interested in you skinny bitches beating the hell out of dumb white men twice your size
Depends on how its done. Alabama (Patricia Arquette) vs Virgil (James Gandolfini) in True Romance was one of the best scenes in an already bad arse movie. It was brutal and they both got fricked up but in the end she got him and it felt earned and believable.

Totally agree. Was talking about that with the wife the other day. The narrative is obvious. Movies now have women or minorities in roles of power and position making them appear extremely intelligent while having a trans or homosexual part of their interracial family. While making the white male look weak, pathetic and stupid.

I think the rub for some people is that strong women in modern pop culture are only strong at the expense of men - normally white men.

He's mad that women are able to beat men up in *checks notes* movies. And then goes on some odd spiel about feminists and trans people or something.
Does he hold that same energy for all of the men in action movies who couldn't realistically still be alive after the first 10 minutes of action?
It's not just the action movies. It's just any normal movie where they portray women as the savior of the dumb man all the time. Anyone who's growing up watching movies today will think that women make up the majority of all leadership positions in business. Are the best soldiers in the military and if you're a woman of color you're obviously the most qualified to be a police chief or fire captain.
Ya wanna know what the real world is like?
Women are nurses, teachers and "HR professionals."
But we all know that Hollywood and academia live in a bubble. I mean seriously, the sister fricking bumpkins from Alabama trailer parks are more worldly and enlightened than your average Hollywood writer.

You can't put a strong and competent female character next to a string and confident male character because the male character will always look like the stronger one. The only way to make it work on screen is to bring down the man and then make the woman talk and act like a man.

Ahsoka Tano is one of the best characters in SW and by far the best female.
She traded barbs with the greatest Jedi of all time.

One would hope that history corrects itself here….. we may be waiting for a long time. Which is fine by me. I can watch Conan the barbarian, predator, Rocky, etc over and over and not bat an eye.
