If the resort is crowded, it's worth just to not have to fight for a beach lounger.

This would probably be my only complaint. Was difficult to find a lounger on the beach at times.

Excellence Club?

Never done it on any of my trips and never really seen a reason to. We've always found chairs at pools and at the beach when we've wanted and I am not particularly looking for seclusion when I go to an AI, if I wanted more privacy I wouldn't be booking an AI. It's more of a perceived value than value IMO but to each their own when it comes to their vacation budget. Personally, I think the money is better spent other places (day trips, upgraded flight class, etc).

we went a few years ago, and there was a problem with the payment for the room. Basically, they had us down for two rooms when we had only booked one. Tried to charge us for the second room. We had gone through a travel agent and she was very helpful in getting it fixed. Had we booked it ourselves, we would not have any leverage in disputing the charges. The agent had all the emails reserving the room, and was able to escalate the issue beyond the person we had been dealing with. It is a great resort, but be careful if you are booking it yourself. It's Mexico, and they have you by the balls as far as money goes if you want to leave. My advice, book through an agent and then go and have a great time.

Travel, agent, or not, anyone traveling should always save their confirmation emails for something they book or reserve. On our last trip to El Carmen we intentionally reserved a swim up room but they brought us to a room with a private plunge pool. They said it was an upgrade, but I didn’t want a private pool. They then tried to say I didn’t book a specific room and that was the best they had in the category I booked. It took me a little extra time at the front desk but after showing them the reservation emails I had they put us in the room that we booked.

I'm seeing a few of these kind of incidents on TripAdvisor and some of the Facebook groups and it has me a little nervous. The main motivation for picking El Carmen was we liked the design of their swim out room. We also liked the location of the Excellence Club Swim outs as they are closer to the beach and main pool. I would be pissed if they tried the bait and switch. It seems as if they try and overbook the lesser rooms to perhaps try and upsell the more premium rooms on check-in.

We've decided to go with EEC over Lopesan but I don't plan on cancelling Lopesan till the very last minute just in case EEC tries to switch us out of the room I booked.

Good advice. For domestic travel I make sure I have all reservations easily accessible by email or app, but for international travel I still take a few minutes to print out confirmation for flights, housing and transportation reservations.

Wife and I went in 2021. It was absolutely fantastic. Room was great, service was great, food was ok, but never bad. Drinks were great and their bartenders have a lot of personality.

We had the suite with private plunge pool. We went in April and the water was freezing so we never used it. But having the big deck was nice. Next time I want the rooftop plunge pool. It gives you a little more privacy.

We did a day in Isla Mujeres with a tour guide that took us around the island bar hopping and shopping. Had a great lunch with Fish Tacos. Well worth it.

I wanted to go back last year, but we’ll make it back soon. It was the most relaxing vacation I’ve ever had.

Make sure to get an early reservation for hibachi. We didn't have one when we showed up, and were told there were no openings. A sizeable tip changed that, but you should be able to book a spot early enough out.

We did not. It wasn't packed when we went, but I don't see a major benefit to it.
The breakfast has tons of variety and we had no regrets on that front (which our friends said was their main reason to do excellence club).

Thinking about getting the two story rooftop terrace suite at the excellence resort in Cancun for July 2024. Would 3 nights be enough time you think? Or should we stay 4?
