quote:Nat Geo is a very good book as mentioned earlier or All About Birds website. Facebook has a group called What's This Bird that exists to help with this situation. Merlin is a phone based birder app.
What's the best way to identify the birds?

I have a mockingbird that has been running off all the other birds from the feeder I put up about a week ago. He will be moving on to other places soon
Put an over ripe apple on a stake away from your feeders

Will be installing a bird buddy in the back yard soon.
I was one of the kickstarter early folks and it took years (plus delay on my parents part) but they finally got it up this weekend.
Actually pretty impressed with the video captures, considerably better than I expected.

interesting great thread!
about 5 years ago I heard the avian flu took out blue jays up north.
I saw them in southern States.
why are they so timid to go to the feeder and yet seem like they can be mean?

Lesley the Bird Nerd on YouTube will find them for you. She's in Canada with plenty of Blue Jays.

Got some good bird action on Saturday.
A gorgeous house finch posted up on a power line in Perdido Key.
Canadian goose on an island about as big around as small swimming pool just off shore in Perdido Key(Big Lagoon) laying eggs. An interesting sight for me.
A brown pelican and great blue heron trying to catch some fish at Gulf State Park.
same great blue heron, lookin all regal n shite.
rare sighting of a Great Crested Flycatcher on the Catman trail. Cool birds.
Saw this baby mockingbird fresh out of the nest sometime last week at the boat landing by my apartment on Bayou Chico. They always look pissed, even as babes.
Heron rookery on Bayou Chico.
2 little terns on a dock piling on Bayou Chico, one with some lunch.

I haven't seen one in several years but Sunday we had a yellow-beaked blue finch on our feeder. Beautiful little bird.

Or, it may have been an Indigo Bunting:

Two bushes on each corner of my house that deliberately leave intact to host nests. It's cool to walk by and they babies start yelling for food.
I also check to make sure snakes aren't messing with them.

On my bird feeder.
reason I asked is because if you are in the U.S. it was probably an indigo bunting or a blue grosbeak.

This morning it has been cardinals mostly.

I have 2 massive blue jays that come around in the mornings.
we had a hawk try and take a Mourning dove the other day, and about 8 crows attacked it - was awesome to watch.
