I got some squirrels taking advantage of our feeder this past week, despite scaring them, BUT: my son also just got a Daisy Red Ryder for Christmas, so I’m hoping for squirrel with my eggs…or at least no more squirrels at the feeder.

Lucky you. They dont visit my feeder but my mother has a birdhouse they visit and nest in every year. Cute little birds.
If you want to try a Bluebird house, I'm in the second year of using four of these:
I've used them along with my other, traditional Bluebird houses. I mounted mine the same, on a pole like that. They're the easiest house to monitor and clean. You just squeeze the PVC pipe and it comes off of the mount, look at the nest, and put it back. They're relatively easy to make, too, or I think some people sell them. I made mine out of scrap material I had around.
I'll be changing all of mine over to these as my other houses have to be retired.

Is there a less portly version of this bird?
There are a bunch of versions of the Dark-Eyed Junco, and their ranges overlap.
I didn't know how varied they were until I listened to the Junco Journeys episode of the Nature Guys podcast.

Juncos are in the sparrow family so they’re fairly small. They have white stripes in their tail feathers as they fly. They winter in the south and will be gone by spring.

We’ve been getting some brown-headed cowbirds. They have the weirdest call…sounds mechanical.

My fave ruby picture I've taken.
I used to just visit my parents to photograph at their feeders, but we've got a good space to feed some birds now so trying to get that setup.

The WP's do seem to like the nuts in my birdfeed as well. If the suet runs out and I dont replace in a reasonable time, they get the nuts from my birdfeeder
I like to switch my feed from mixed, to sunflower to nuts only. All the birds like the variety.

We have some pileated woodpeckers that hang around. They're pretty shy but we hear them and sometimes see them. Saw an albino Cardinal last year.

i don't actually have a feeder up right now, but i've been seeing these birds in the orchard and at the pond
chipping sparrows
savannah sparrows
killdeers
cardinals
mockingbirds
yellow rumped warblers
pink warblers
downy woodpeckers
red bellied woodpeckers
carolina wrens
carolina chickadees
northern harrier
red tailed hawk
great egret
bluebirds returned from wherever today...i'm pretty sure the first cedar waxwings showed up also, but it was overcast and they were too high in the tree to verify...

Good to hear you're getting more down that way now.

I haven't seen one in my area in several years. They're around, but I haven't spotted one.

That's why the old timers, my Pops included, call them snowbirds. They believed they brought the snow with them.

Not at the feeder obviously, but there's a blue heron that used to follow me when I came out in the late afternoon to feed the bluegill at the dock, would stand practically right next to me to get one. It's amazing how large of a fish they can get down their skinny little throats. It's cartoonish.
Lots of Kingfishers and unfortunately Canada Geese. Used to be some wood ducks and mallards but haven't seen any of them in about 5 years.

Some may remember the Atlanta snow/icestorm about ten years ago that shut the whole city down because it wasn't forecasted until about 12 hours prior, with whatever models they used. About 3 days prior, an old black lady that worked as a security guard at my office building told me it was going to snow, because she'd seen the "snow birds".

You've had it bad between this and the mantis eating the dragonfly.

i discovered some tiny green striped grasshopper nymphs in a patch of dandelions about a week ago...there was a bright pink one that i saw almost every day...then nothing for the past 2 days...when i was walking back toward that spot today, about a half dozen yellow rumped warblers flew away from there...so i guess i know what happened to my pink friend
