I still don’t understand Zions refusal to shoot the 12-15ft jumper

Last night he refuses it all game and then in crunch time shoots a contested one and drills it.

He’s a good shooter from that distance how has he not been taught/convinced to use that as a weapon?

If he’d just shoot it occasionally it would make him infinitely harder to guard.

I know I’m not saying anything new, just frustrating sometimes!!!

I’ve heard interviews where the coaching staff said they’ve encouraged him to do that. Problem is Zion and BI are don’t like stretching there comfort zones

That is an inefficient shot. He has added that little jump hook/ floater around the basket which is about as far as he really should go bc imo his most underrated ability is his ability to rebound his misses. Zion’s 2nd leap is so fast that when he misses contested layups he typically is the 1st one back up to grab the rebound. Shooting from far out negates that skill.

Meh, this is where sabermetrics don’t tell the whole story. Yes stats say layup or 3 and if you can get to the rim it’s better. In this case, if his defender is going to stand under the rim when he has the ball at the ft line he should shoot. He already wins the battle at the rim most of the time when they are standing waiting for him. If they had to step up and defend him normally, he’d be unstoppable when he goes to the rim.

Don’t actually be delusional,
Delusional. BI and Zion are our two
best weapons. They’re working together more effectively this season.

Zions job is to put pressure on front courts. When he starts taking closer to 18-20 attempts per game you'll see more jumpers. Right now his job is to get the ball on the rim, pull the center, and let jv board and finish any misses.

Its low key our best offense that works consistently right now. Until we work to generate more 3pt attempts for trey and cj we're going to do this. And the good news is that it's efficient as frick. Zion and JV work together very well.

Yea exactly this. That’s why adding the occasional jumper will open the offense even more. They’ll have to try and come up higher on those screens, Zion will get downhill easier and Jonas will have even better rebounding opportunities

Honestly if there is anything for him to change in his game right now it should be defensive rebounding and defense. That is if I had to prioritize something. I don’t think the occasional jumper is as high of a priority.

I will say some stupid coaching that was on display was Charlotte. I watched the Charlotte broadcast last night. The assistant that gave the halftime interview made it sound like a key to their second half was drawing charges on Zion. In my opinion, the fact it was a priority was indicating they were going to be playing more passive defense on him and rotating early. I just thought that was kind of stupid. They were basically going to depend on the refs to bail them out.

Exactly. Can’t imagine why we just don’t dunk every ball. I mean that’s the most efficient shot there is. Why take any other shot??

He'll have to hit it at a 50% rate for teams to even blink. Teams will gladly give up that shot every time.

He shoots 67% at the basket and this also forces bigs to foul him in the process in turn puts him at the line and puts bigs in foul trouble.

His shooting percentages going away from the basket gets significantly lower.

5-9 feet: 35.8%
10-14 feet: 33.3 %

So what does this mean? These shots aren't developed and isn't in his comfort zone nor is it a confident shot for him. Should he develop it to diversify his game? Absolutely. But he hasn't developed that shot to use regularly. It's going to be up to him add it and use it as a weapon. But it's probably won't change the way teams defend him.
