I am an agnostic who leans toward atheism...I have no proof there is or isn't a god but I lean toward there not being. I am not arrogant enough, however, to say I am right and everyone else is wrong as believers are.

I am pretty glad that the majority of mankind needs the idea that there is the slightest chance that their misdeeds against others may come back to bike them in the arse. If you look at what believers will do to one another and to those who do not beleive it is scary to imagine what they might get up to if they did not have the fear that, however infinite the possibility, their misdeed will require a reckoning someday. Most people are not made of the moral and ethical "stuff" that would allow them to act like a civilized human being if it weren't for someone watching and judging them. Yes, it certainly impedes progress and is at times used to justify heinous acts but the alternative is the same ignorant people doing what they want without any fear of payment.
