NOLA: Tyrann Mathieu is the Saints' nominee for one of the NFL's most prestigious honors

quote:

When he first signed back with his hometown New Orleans, Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu made clear his intentions to be a force in the city as well as the field.

On Tuesday, Mathieu was named the Saints' nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award, given annually to the NFL player who not only excels on game day, but is an agent of positive, lasting change in their community.

This is Mathieu's second time earning a team nomination for the honor, with the first coming in 2021 when he was a member of the Kansas City Chiefs.

quote:

In his two seasons with the Saints, Mathieu has played in every game and nearly every defensive snap. In his 29 games with the Saints, he's been on the field for at least 99% of the snaps in 28 games, the lone outlier being this year's blowout win against the New England Patriots.

Mathieu has produced, too, recording six interceptions and 14 passes defended during his two-year run with the Saints.

But, as promised, Mathieu has been active in New Orleans beyond his role as a football player.

He hosts several events for New Orleans children throughout the year, through his own foundation and with the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Louisiana and Son of a Saint, including a football camp and a back-to-school jamboree.

If you haven't been paying attention HB7 is all over the place in different communities doing positive things. In addition, to many inner city schools. Mathieu recently was in Loranger in the middle of BFE. He showed up with an 18 wheeler full of equipment, helped unload it, and spent time at practice with those kids. Most athletes tend to stay within the boundries of inner cities. Loranger is in the middle of nowhere.

When it comes to location Honeybadger DGAF - He will go where the people need the help. It further solidifies that in addition to being the most instinctual player I've ever witnessed in football - he's my all time favorite Tiger.

Good for him because he overcame his issues that got him kicked off LSU team and never held any grudges and has used his NFL platform to help those most in need including in his hometown that needs as much help as it can get for those stuck in the same lifestyle he made it out of.

A perfect example of how to not be a victim and hold ones self accountable for making poor choices. I am very proud of him.

Yep he is such a great success story. Plenty of NFL stars past and present have come from nothing and made it big, but for him to be kicked off his hometown college team at the height of his popularity, see his draft stock tumble from his drug suspension, then turn that into motivation to be one of the best in history, WHILE giving back to the communities he has played in and now come from, is truly remarkable.

Hats off to HB and the good he does for our communities and young men!

Not to mention 3 combined knee surgeries on both legs. I remember folks including me thinking he wouldn’t last long in the NFL because his size. It won’t be the 1st time I was wrong about him. I hope he’s enjoying his NFL swan song.

It's not often a player comes around that could create the chaos that he could. He had an insane ability to find the football... and take it.

As far as college FB... he was a generational talent.

I was literally watching an HB7 highlight reel last night. Such an electric player. Anything can happen with Mathieu on the field.

I love hearing good things for him. I wish him continued success in the NFL and in life. A great Tiger.
