I don’t know about killing it, but I don’t think it’s helping.

But it’s so weird. For whatever reason, golf if the only sport where people are trying to force LIV to happen and tell you how great it is. Soccer fans aren’t telling you how great the Saudi league is now that Ronaldo, Benzema, Mitrovic, Mahrez, etc. are in the league. They say it sucks that they’re not playing in the best leagues in the world which seems like a rational response.

I mean, good for the players to go get paid but I don’t understand how it helps me as a golf fan.

In general, golf is not a great sport to attend in person just by its nature of golfers never being on the same hole and you missing most of the action.l because you can’t be multiple places at the same time. No other sport is like that except maybe street tracks for car races.

outside of Augusta and WM, which were elite events for very different reasons, I tend to agree.

Stuff like the Houston Open is good for moderately entertaining day drinking. March is way better suited for that than June.

Maybe bc one league didn’t have a monopoly on the entire sport & it’s normal to have other competition for the best players.

Looking at other pro sports 400 million contracts for superstars seems to be the norm these days. Ohtani could be in the 600 million range. The NFL, NBA, and MLB are handing out 400 million dollar contracts every year. Why not pro golfers?

Why not the WNBA?

Good point. Everyone brings this up about the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL all the time

That LIV event is gonna be hot AF. I think it was in the low triple digits around that time last year. Still can’t believe they’re doing it in June. At least they’ll be able to wear shorts!

"Unhappy" for being on the PGA tour is a new one for sure.

I’ve listed some earlier but let’s just say…. If i have people who work for me and who are better at their job than most and they are offered a significant raise to leave.. I have a couple of choices and Jay and the tours leadership choose all the wrong ones.

To say it was a significant raise is very misleading. It was way more than a significant raise. The PGA Tour cannot compete with Saudi money. End of story.

Someone on this board should go to the PGA Houston Open on 3/28 & then go to LIV Houston on 6/7 and tell us how much better the PGA Event is for “fans”. When it comes down to it, most of the haters are small minded & are just thinking about the golfers they get to watch on tv every Saturday and Sunday. Go to an event & tell me the PGA is so much better than the LIV product that they are bringing to other countries all over the world

PGA and fans only care about TV. Fans rarely go to a tournament, and if they do, it is no more than one a year.

Golf was just first, soccer is happening now. Basketball will likely be next.

Gotta be a merger soon or the sport is dead.

That’s what I’ve said multiple times in this thread. LIV isn’t killing the professional sport of golf, it’s just killing the PGA & everyone’s weekend of watching golf on CBS.

Well LIV needs to improve their product for TV otherwise it’s going to effectively kill pro golf if nobody is watching. Because the current LIV product fricking sucks and nobody is watching

Players get traded to different teams for more money all the time. They’re not loyal to their first team bc “they already get paid enough”

All I really care about are the majors and I actually like the idea of them being almost like a Super Bowl where the two leagues compete against each other.

i hope 2023 is more of an outlier for summers than the new normal. I can deal with mid-90s, the 105+ day after day was soul-sucking.

Either way, north Houston is hot has frick with zero wind. I have played GC on some hot days and it fricking miserable.

What do you see happening with basketball?

Salary cap structures make it impossible to do much of anything that will be nearly as disruptive.

I guess what he's saying is they could start a new league overseas and start offering contracts 4x as much as the NBA pays . Salary caps wouldn't exist in that structure.

If you look at what they've done with soccer, golf, and F1 racing, it wouldn't completely shock me to go after a North American sport that has a large base of international interest. Imagine international guys like Giannis, Luka, and Jokic getting offered $200M/year to go play in some other league overseas and the trickle down that could occur when American born players see the coin they could be making when basic economics don't matter to franchises

I don't think it will happen but it also wouldn't shock me if they tried

I played a decent bit this summer but usually after 4 at memorial. Kid/work limits my golf so i can't be picky about weather.
