Archie Bunker one the most iconic TV characters was his creation. His politics were left but he made great TV.

He made Good Times too. The guy that made the Good Times thread is probably beside himself.

Ehh, not entirely true. All in the Family was based off of a British show called Til Death Us Do Part.
Still a great show and character.
Also, look into the origin of Three’s Company.

I met Carroll O’Connor in Hammond back in the late 80's when they were shooting the TV series, In The Heat of The Night. Great guy.

Norman and the network censors probably went to war every week.

And that’s “Chief Gillespie” to you, I’ll thank you.
RIP in peace to Mr Lear.

Archie Bunker, Fred Sanford, George Jefferson, JJ, Maude, etc. Created some of the best shows and characters ever.
Lived a long life. RIP.

Sanford and Son was based off of Steptoe and Son.
It’s astounding how many American shows were based off of British ones.

Just saw this youtube short about Lear.
He was a WWII veteran. I didn't know that. Says he was a college freshman when Pearl Harbor was attacked - he immediately joined the military. Radio operator and gunner on bombers. Says he wrote a few episodes of South Park, basing Cartman's character on Archie Bunker.

He and John Amos butted heads constantly. It ended up with him being fired from “Good Times”. He wanted to show more positive things about black culture rather than JJ yelling dynamite every episode.

quote:Lear claimed he conceived AITF independently but then learned of TDUDP's existence, & bought the rights to cover himself legally.

FWIW, AITF (early seasons at least) is a much better show show than TDUDP.
