I killed a 225 lb cull type six point yesterday after he made a scrape. Eight does in the field, but he didn’t seem interested in them.
Had a spike five minutes behind a doe this morning. He was grunting the whole way.

I had the deer I've been hunting for 2 years at 18 yards Friday afternoon. 5.5/6.5 year old 200lb+ 10pt.
He never gave me an angle. I drew on him when he was about 35 out behind an oak tree. Came in on a hard quarter to and there was a split second where I probably could've stopped him and released, but rain was coming and I told myself if I hit him back or gutshot him I'd throw my bow away. So I didn't shoot figuring he'd give me a better opportunity.
He fed straight towards me for about 5 minutes. I had to let down. He made a really tight, really fast 180 degree turn and walked away. Been trying to kill a mature buck with my bow in St. Tammany or Washington Parish my entire life and that was the closest I've ever gotten. I don't regret not shooting because I'm a high percentage shot type person, but man it was devastating watching him walk away. Cool to see him I guess and hopefully he slips up again. Bowhunting is heartbreak.

It’s really hard not to release an arrow once you’ve drawn back. It’s awesome to have mature bucks in bow range, shot or not. Stay with him.

I went freshen up a mock scrape yesterday after my morning hunt. Had a nice 8pt checking it out this morning while I'm at work.....

Agreed. I've been in the situation plenty of times, but never with a deer like this. The funny thing is I was rock solid on the draw and the hold. Breathing and heart rate were all controlled. The second I let down, I got the shakes like I've never gotten them before.
I just keep telling myself I made the right call. At least by not taking a marginal shot, there's still a chance I'll get him. If I'd have wounded that deer on a marginal shot I don't know that I'd ever get over it. Just gonna keep after him. I've got good wind coming back Thursday and hope to be back in the woods Thursday and Friday afternoon.
