Especially with that $11MM pool for assistants.

Kelly had $8.2M to work with when he came in, OL Coach was under a 3 year contract, $820K last year and $850K this year. I think I’m close on the numbers. What Kelly walked into as for AD and other support, it’s better than what Elko is getting at aTm, that’s my opinion. Elko has a way better roster, if he can keep it together.

I have a number of friends that played, coached and graduated from aTm, they too are watching this one unfold.

So the pool is slightly better than industry average. Good. It’s not stupid money.

A&M needs to upgrade several spots on the coaching staff over last year. Already addition by subtraction so far.

One of the other advantages that Elko has is that he actually recruited some of the older guys, so he knows them.

I’m have no sources, but I can’t believe those are “hard” numbers. Woodward and co are gonna commit $95 million to Kelly and he can day, I can get the best D coordinator in the country, but he’s 200k over my “limit,” or we can get the 25th best for $1.9? And they go with the $1.9 guy? Same with Elko. A&M is gonna spend the crazy money they do, but nickel and dime over a couple hundred K when it might be the difference between a great hire and a “meh” one?

I get that you have to draw a line somewhere and cant give HCs blank checks to hire their staffs, but you cant spend hundreds of millions on the HC, facilities, players, etc…and cock block them on assistants over a few grand. I assume anybody that leaves A&M is doing so because Elko doesn't know them well enough to fight for them. He may think Robinson is a good DT, but isnt worth the capital (financial or political) to fight for however many 100ks it would take to keep him in College Station. Just like I don't think Woodward and co would block Kelly from getting the "right guy" over a few hundred k if he really believed in them.
