Be as flexible as you can with your dates and times, be willing to fly budget airlines, and make sure to search all 3 airports (LGA, JFK, EWR)

I’ll also be in the city that weekend so maybe we will run into each other.

Google Flights

THIS.
Looks like Jet Blue has direct flights on the 18th early in the morning or mid-day for $229 one-way. Duration is about 2 1/2 hrs.

Southwest has a flight through Chicago on the 17th, 5 hrs duration, for $223. Nothing at a decent price from them on the 18th.

Spirit has a lot of low fares to NYC (less than $100), but they have all have stops and ridiculously long layovers-- shortest is about 10 hrs. duration. NOT RECOMMENDED TO FLY SPIRIT FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN A DIRECT FLIGHT.

Google flights. Pay more to flight direct. Don’t check bags.

I've taken this flight a bunch of times, this is a decent price for it. Especially a couple weeks out and this close to Christmas.

Advice to a novice traveler:

Flying north this close to Christmas, through a place known to get winter weather is a dice roll with a connection. If flying north, always take a direct flight. Your flight will (probably) always leave your departing airport eventually, even if on a long delay. They need that plane to get to NYC and bring people back. If there's bad weather in New York, they'll just delay you for 5 hours before departing.

Different ball of wax if you're connecting. You might see the same 5 hour departure delay because of bad weather in Chicago. By the time you finally arrive at your connecting airport, the weather has cleared and your connection has left. Now - all the people that also missed that connection are trying to catch the next flight(s) to that destination. Add in some extra holiday travelers and the recipe is there for headache.

As long as the weather holds, you'll (probably) be fine - but I'll pay more to fly direct in the winter.

I just use google.

Cross referencing with all the sites its basically the same.

The way to get cheap flights is to hope the cheaper airlines are going there when you want and you dont need to check a bag.

If you can fly to Newark, you can get the train right into the city and save time and money on cabs or Uber

I’ve never tried any of those recommendations above. I travel so much for work I have all the major airlines phone apps and book on them all the time. I say all, it’s not that many I suppose. Delta, American, United, and Southwest.
