Disregard the stupid comments.
Yes, this has been an extreme drought and there will be a huge number of trees (several species) not recover from it. Take notice of how many trees that are in a typical "wet" area have turned brown. REASON....they did not develope a deep root system due to being in a "wet" area and during a severe drought, the shallow root system is sucking hind tit looking for water.
Take notice of how many Magnolias are totally brown...they gone.

You are describing the dirty work of ips beetles.
They are killing weak trees. Most trees are severely stressed from the weather and lack of water. A healthy tree can fight off an ips infestation. A severely stressed tree can not.
