Eclipse Reservations Cancelled

About 6 months ago I booked a reservation through VRBO to stay in a condo in Hot Springs, AR, for the solar eclipse. Today I get a call from someone who said they were “property management”, and the res was being cancelled due to HOA restrictions. It wasn’t the person listed on VRBO. I’ve tried messaging the “premier host” and crickets. Anyone have experience with this? ETA this is my first time using VRBO. According to their site, if they cancel within 30 days of your reservation, they will try to find you a comparable one, but this is 5 months out and there is nothing in the eclipse path open for a reasonable rate. I paid $950 for 4 nights and you can’t find anything near that.

Probably triple or more. I’ve looked. And this was a studio apartment attached to a larger condo, not a “premium” place. The eclipse has become a huge deal in these areas in the path of totality. They have people renting out tent spots in their fields at this point. But do I have any recourse?

This in and of itself isn't an issue IMO. It is entirely possible that the homeonwre lives in an HOA taht does not allow short term rentals but listd it on VRBO anyway, then when the HOA/management found out started nipping it in the bud to get into clmpliance.
What does sound fishy though is how the management would have your informaiton. That doesn't even seem possible unles the homeonwer gave it to the management company, but they'd have no reason to do taht.

I messaged the owner “Is it true that my reservations are being cancelled?” Nothing so far.

Happened to us a couple of years ago for a trip to the Oregon Coast. Sucks, but the company isn't going to help you at all and you aren't likely to hear back from the owner.
The others are probably right that the owner got a higher offer and the HOA issue is a red herring. Maybe check to see if the house is still taking reservations at other times and use that to press on the justification, but in my experience the company just plays stupid and cites legal jibberish without actually addressing any of your actual points or questions.
This is why I quit using these sites and went back to hotels.

I won’t likely use them again, either. I would like to get my money back, though.

We got all the money back from the rental itself. The company did help with that, and if they don't your credit card will.
As far as finding alternatives or engaging the owner on the cancellation they were useless.
They also didn't help with recovering adjacent costs. For instance, we had chartered a deep sea fishing trip and they wouldn't cover the costs that would have been lost due to last minute cancellation. Luckily the charter company was awesome and refunded everything - only time I have left a review for something I didn't actually use...

Austin, Dallas, and Waco are all in the path, you could try booking a hotel in one of those cities during the eclipse so you can still see it.

That’s unfortunate, but I’ve had excellent experiences with VRBO. Maybe it’s just a shitty owner.
