Pocket knife recommendations

11 year old boy wants a pocket knife for Christmas. I would like to get something he could keep for a lifetime as a keepsake of sorts, so looking for a quality piece. Budget is at or under $100 unless you can convince me otherwise.
Practically, he doesn't really have a use for one, so it will probably sit there.
Thanks in advance for any feedback as this isn't an area that I am knowledgeable in.

Case sodbuster
Case trapper
Are two long term lifetime ownership classic knives.
A ten yr old will lose any of them within six months.

11 year olds don't keep knives for life .... they lose them.
Ask me how I know.
If you're lucky you'll find some of them in the yard.
In the meantime, buy Rough Riders or eBay or Amazon. They're handsome, they're inexpensive, you can teach your son to sharpen them, you can afford to get him a nice trapper style or something along those lines .... and when he loses it, it's not the end of the world.
If he does manage to keep it for life he can pass it down to his Sons, along with all the pocket knives he collects on his own including the really nice one you award him once he's graduated college and settled into his first real job.
Good Luck

Great minds think alike.
We posted at almost the same instant.
You recommended two good knives btw ... but, as you and I both already stated, those are not for 10 and 11 year old kids.
I can tell, you're a pocket knife man.
What's your EDC?

11 years old to keep forever
Case trapper
75 years from now, that worn out knife will have so many stories tied to it and hopefully handed down to a great grand child

Currently rotate between a benchmade bugout and a leatherman skelatool just depending on what I think I will get into that day.
I had a case trapper that was given to me by my pawpaw that I lost at my parents house during Katrina. I have avoided buying one cus I felt agravated by not still having that on but probably need to buy one to pass down to my kids.
As much as I like a bugout or carbon fiber handle ZT they just don’t have that same heirloom knife look and feel of say a case or ol timer .

I'm still rocking the Opinel No. 7

Thanks guys. I understand odds are against me on it not being lost, but willing to take the chance as he is somewhat responsible.

I've got pocket knives that have been snowballing down the pipeline from the men in my family for over 100 years ... longer than that actually.
Pocket knives are a big thing to us. My great grandfather, grandfather, my Dad who just passed away a year ago in his 90s left me several hundred ... combining those with mine, it is a big deal in my family.
I give my Son and SiLs knives and multitools for their birthdays and at Christmas.
I've got a ProTech Godfather clipped to my pocket right now.
We should have a "show us your pocket knife" thread on this board.

A Victorinox Pioneer Swiss Army Knife with Alox handles is a handsome, sturdy, useful knife. A kid would probably love it. Would set you back about fifty bucks.
ETA: There are also many other Swiss Army knife models available at a range of prices.

A classic option just to add to the other suggestions could be the Buck 110.

I've got an Old Timer Stockman that I got in the early 70's. I carry it every day. Carbon steel blades which I much prefer.

I have three Buck 110's, plus several Schrade USA equivalents. A Buck 110 is a great deer knife, maybe not the best for an 11 year old's first knife, though.

Depends on what you expect him to use it for. My first knife was a case sodbuster…I’m now 60 years old and still have it. It is a good skinning knife but is a little large for carrying every day. For a true pocket knife, I’d go for a case sodbuster Jr.

The Case Slimline trapper carries well, too.
