Usually, renting isn’t much cheaper, it’s just cheap enough to be a better deal, but expensive enough that it takes 10+ years to build the 20% down to escape.

Renting is cheaper when you factor in all of the additional costs of home ownership. Repairs, yard work, all of the additions sq/ft you have to furnish, etc.
But you’re right…getting any significant down payment is tough and I’d be scared to death to be sitting in a house I over financed a couple of years ago. Just because you bought it doeant mean you actually OWN it.
