Nursing home care costs and availability

Unfortunately it looks like I will need to be placing my wife in a nursing home in the very near future. First has anyone had decent experiences with in the Baton Rouge area. That is where she will need to go. Second, probably won’t have the ability to pay the “full” price due to various circumstances. Her life insurance policy may pay I understand. I have to call and check on that. There is also an option out there since she receives a monthly disability check that she could possibly go somewhere that would take that monthly check as payment. Any advice is accepted here. Thanks in advance

I’d look into Medicaid. There’s a five year look back, but generally, if you are married, I think you just move everything that has her name on it into your name and you should qualify. It’s much easier to get on if there is a living spouse.

Practice elder law here in FL. We can almost always get someone qualified for Medicaid so medicaid pays for the nursing home (minus the spouses income). We can save all assets. You should find a competent elder law attorney in your area. I'd set up a few free consults

Have you priced monthly rates for a room at a nursing home? Make you want to vomit.

Yea. Its about $6500 from what I hear.

When you say a 5 year look back, you mean assets and finances correct? I have been diagnosed with cancer recently on top of her medical issues. Our home is paid for. I am not working. She gets a disability check monthly. We do have a decent little in a joint savings and I have a 401k that has a little in it.

no legal advice, but that sucks. Sorry

I don’t have any advice. Just wanted to say I hope you get this figured out. I’ll say a prayer for you and your wife that the path is revealed for you.

Correct. I’m in Mississippi, so things may be a tad different in Louisiana. But here, if you get your wife’s name off all the assets/finances, you should qualify. If you’ve sold/transferred property or large amounts of money in the last five years, it makes it harder. The Medicaid application is a hassle and a process and there’s a lot of things to provide-bank statements, etc., so you probably won’t to get started on it. I used to work with long term care Medicaid here in Mississippi and have helped lots of nursing home residents get qualified.

If I recall correctly owning your home will not count against you when you calculate your assets for Medicaid purposes.

First, I'm very sorry to hear that.
Second - and not being cute/coy - do you actually mean nursing home? Can you be more specific about the level of care you require? "Nursing home" has a very specific meaning in the industry and I don't want to tell you something wrong.

It is definitely nursing home. She can’t do enough for herself to go to an assisted living facility

quote:OK, understood. I'm right in the middle of moving someone from AL to skilled nursing. What I can tell you is you need to be on top of everything. It was already not the best labor pool pre-pandemic/inflation, but now, these facilities are really struggling to keep full employment given how much more they are paying their workers.

My advice is this: don't skimp. It will be expensive. But if you have some assets to draw on, then do it. Try like hell to make sure she's in a private facility as opposed to a state one. I hope the other guys here can help you get some Medicaid assistance for offsetting some of the private facility costs, but I know that can be difficult.
Very sorry for your situation. I know firsthand it's no picnic.
ETA: Skilled nursing @ Saint James Place in BR is ~$10K/month.

My wife is currently on Medicare but not Medicade. How would Medicade help? Who the hell as 10K available a month for something like this. I have about 4 months worth then.

So sorry you are dealing with this. We put my FIL in a memory care facility in June. His cost is $7k a month currently. Luckily he had a long term care policy that will pay $4500 for 36 months, but not sure what will happen if he outlines that and the bit of money he has.
Best of luck finding her the best care you can.

St James Place is the gold standard in Baton Rouge. Expensive, but no corners are cut.

quote:Eh. I'm about 2 years in to my experience with them and it hasn't been all that smooth. Lots of personnel issues. My advice is to always be the squeakiest wheel on behalf of your loved one. I feel really bad for the residents that don't have people to come check on the operation on a daily basis.

I went through this with my mother about a year ago. Not sure if it would apply but if you are a veteran and served any active duty during wartime, look into Time and Attendance benefits. This was mentioned to me and upon doing some homework I was able to get some financial help from the VA. My dad served in the Air Force during the Korean War, although he didn’t fight in it( stationed in Africa and Europe) but it was enough to qualify my mom for assistance in paying for her nursing home care.
It’s quite a maze to navigate and legal advice definitely helps. I’m in NC and there was legislation out on the books during the COVID fiasco that basically holds harmless the homes that don’t staff up to necessary levels. The place my mom was seemed to be good at first but the quality of help deteriorated as they seemed to churn through folks. As another said, stay on top of the care your wife is receiving.
