This has just started making noise in my attic. It's loud enough that you can hear it clearly on my 2nd floor. I can't call my AC guy until Monday.

That is a pump, you must not have a drain line that simply drains your A/C. If it is still working, let in make noise. If not, when it backs up, you A/C will shut down.

Looks like a water pump that drains the secondary drain pan beneath the evaporator coil as I can see what appears to be is an emergency cut off switch (black in color) below the white pump that would shut the system down if water rose in the secondary drain pan and the water pump was not working to drain the pan.
I would guess that white water pump is bad and a bearing in the pump is making a squealing noise when the pump is running?

Homedepot or Lowes for about 50 to 75 dollars. AC condenser pump

thats your condensate pump to remove the water made by the a/c system.
go buy a new condensate pump at home depot or order it off ebay, making sure it meets or beats the specs listed on the old pump, and install it.
the pump will cost you around $50 and you will easily save yourself $250 doing it yourself

If you do it yourself, some of those pumps come with a built-in auxiliary safety switch, and for an extra level of protection you would tie it in series with the black switch that the previous poster mentioned.
It also may not be an issue, but some of those pumps are taller than others and if you don’t have much fall on the drain line, coming from the evaporator to where the pump sits in the pan, then you need to make certain that the newer pump is around the same height as the other.

Yes, makes noise intermittently.
Ok. I guess I am going to home depot.

I think the above advice is bad. Your pump is probably working normally.
My guess is it’s a secondary pump that backs up your main condensate line. Your main line is clogged and backing up to your pump, so your pump is turning on when your AC runs causing condensate that causes your pump to run.
My guess is you need to add bleach or vinegar to your main AC line. It’s clogged.
