I have recently acquired a property that was overgrown with brush and stickers and whatnot. I have gone through and bush hogged most of it a couple months back. Just went back and it’s all brown where I cut obviously, I just want to be able to return it back to pasture grasses. Any ideas? I’m new to the pasture land and upkeep so anything helps.

Fire. And plant back native grasses. Hell, burning it a couple times and wating to see what comes back may be the most interesting approach. Burn at the right time to kill off the brush and invasives and the dormant seed bank should stay viable. Dormant seeds will sprout when given a chance (sunlight and water). You could make the decision to plant it after that if it doesn't suit you.

Do you think it’s okay to burn right now? Should I take any precautions other than not be an idiot with the torch?

It’s awfully dry in north Ms to try and burn anything right now.

That being said, if you have good fire lines cut and you aren’t burning on a windy day it may possibly ok as long as there aren’t any bans.

Just make sure you burn into the wind. That way it won’t get out of control and it will burn the grasses and stuck to the dirt.

Just keep mowing it and the grasses will take over within a year or so. I think burn bans are still in effect, so be careful if you burn anything.

This guy has a great instagram feed about just that. It's really good to see he's promoting native grasses and plants in the Southeast.
