Pacific coastal regions of Costa Rica?

I tried to add to another thread, but the answers were mostly to the OP's questions, so I'll start a new one.
We're considering our first trip to CR end of December/January for about a week. Thinking we'll do the coastal thing this trip, maybe the mountain regions next time.
A friend highly recommended Capitan Suizo in Tamarindo. This appears to be on the north end of the CR coast. She said that the bars are close enough to walk, and the resort guy set up everything else, no car rental needed.
I was wondering how the north end differs from the central and southern coastal areas.

Mal Pais and over to Montezuma (the waterfalls out of town were the dreamiest things we experienced in our month driving all over CR) are much cooler than the Tamarindo area to me. The coast north of Mal Pais, up to Manzanillo is gorgeous. Cabo Blanco reserve is amazing.
Another cool place in CR is Puerto Viejo de Talamanca on the southern tip of the other coast. Way more upbeat than the Pacific side, more Jamaican, crazy waves, night clubs…

That resort looks super nice if that's what you're looking for. The beaches are pretty and Tamarindo is a nice town. I feel it's very Americanized. If you want a nice beach, a beautiful resort, and a little shopping, clubbing, etc in town, it's great. Maybe a little nicer than Mexico because there are less people.
But I feel you are really missing Costa Rica. The La Fortuna area, the Manuel Antonio area, both are very nice and have a lot more Costa Rica flavor. I think it's extremely easy to split a trip between La Fortuna and Tamarindo. Do 3 nights in the mountains and then the rest relaxing on the beach. It's also extremely easy to drive there and rent a car. I personally think a week is too long on the coast.

Agreed. Just my preference, but ditch the resorts and get a house/condo in Manuel Antonio area.

We stayed at Casa Castillo with some friends several years back in Manuel Antonio and really enjoyed it.

ETA: You definitely have to watch where you leave things around the patios and pool area of the house. Monkeys come out of the trees and will swipe your stuff and head back into the trees. Those bastards.
