Public medical schools back then were not nearly as much $$ as now... maybe $6-8k per year?

Also, I had a small inheritance from my grandfather and money saved from working during college.

One of my friends enlisted in the AirForce, they fully paid for his college and medical school tuitions with additional living stipends.

So, it is possible to not rely on student loans...
