Hiroki Totoki will assume the interim CEO role starting on April 1, 2024. The Sony Group Corporation president, COO, and CFO will also become chairman of SIE starting next month to "support Mr. Ryan in his transition," Sony said.

Additionally, Sony said Totoki will "work closely" with Sony Group Corporation Chairman and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida to navigate PlayStation's future, "including the succession of the SIE CEO role."

In a statement today, Ryan cited the difficulty of living in Europe while working in North America as a reason for the decision.

You think this is because Sony had such a strong position in the console market then Microsoft firmly outplayed them over the last year?

underneath it all, it probably has something to do with the activision acquisition with microsoft, but all i know is what i've bolded in the OP. i didn't realize he was living in europe.

Jim Ryan is being allowed to retire. You know this is true because they don't have a replacement lined up. If this was planned, his replacement would already have been announced. This was sudden. Glad to see him get fired. He deserves it.

Regardless, this is great news for gaming. Maybe this will make it easier for Sony to mend fences with Activision and Microsoft after that deal closes.

He used that as his excuse for not being able to appear in person at the FTC trial, even though PlayStation's HQ (where he works) is only a 30 minute drive from the court. Of all affected parties, he was the only exec not to appear in person while he was also representing the company with the closest proximity to the court.

Almost certainly. Jim Ryan has brought US government attention to Sony's anti-competitive practices in Japan that would not have occurred had he not colluded with the FTC against the MS/ABK merger. Maybe his ouster will satisfy some of those concerns or allow him to cite an NDA (or residency again) if he's called to testify.

i'm not gonna say you're wrong. but that doesn't mean you're right either. none of us know the real reason. it's not like he's out of the role today. he's leaving next year. plenty of time to assign a new CEO.

could be a coincidence. then again, it might not be.

eta: he's been CEO since 2019, but he's worked for SIE since '94. not hard to believe he's dipping out on his own.

I've been wrong about literally nothing related to the MS/ABK situation yet. Been saying Jim Ryan should be fired for at least 6 months now.

I guess this is as much as someone who's been arguing with me about it all along is willing to admit though.

Announcing an "interim" instead of a replacement is pretty telling to me. Makes it seem like they don't want Jim Ryan assisting with the replacement search.

if they didn't want him assisting, he wouldn't be hanging around for 6 months.

Couldn't he just move to North America?

Why did he have to reside in Europe? He could have easily had two homes in different places.

I edited my post before you replied because I haven't been talking about this for a year so the original sentence made no sense. Not my fault it takes you 5 minutes to write a few sentences.

Evidently not since I was able to capture your mistake. Quoting/bolding/typing isn’t as efficient on mobile as it on on desktop.

So instead of owning up to your mistake and saying, “my bad, finch. I misstated. It’s only been 6 months”…..

You try to play it off like I’m the idiot and act like an edit wasn’t just made.

Keep carrying your L, son.

You’re not getting it. I capture you saying a year. You originally play it off as if you didn’t with your comment to my response. Those are the facts regardless if it took me 4 minutes or 4 hours to hit the submit button.

You have to be one of the biggest losers on this site. You should go back to arguing that "consensual" sex with a 13 year old isn't a big deal on the OT.
