Filling with hot water and heard a loud bang.

Water seeped out.

Is this due to uneven instal or just too hot?

Bathtubs have to be rated for scalding hot water…..right?

Since the crack is middle bottom I would say the middle is not supported and the weight of the water bent into a smile until it popped

What material is the tub? How was the tub supported/installed?

I’m not sure about freestanding tubs, but I know drop ins have to be supported in a mortar bed to ensure they can bear the weight.

Be careful there is probably water under the tub that you can't access. If it won't drain out I'd take a shop vac or towel and dry it all up as best as possible.

Hard to say for sure but I'd guess its manufacturing defect, I'd think you'd have to do a damn terrible job installing it for it to break on the very first go and that looks like its close enough to level.

Are tub drains typically right in the middle?

this happens when a new tub is sealed in place when empty, instead or correctly sealing it while its full and fully settled into place.

but its usually just a chip or a crack, in this case, i think the floor was putting uneven pressure on it with a high spot so before replacing the tub be sure to check the level of the floor and shim as needed to get even support

It’s free stand from build dot com.

The installer says it must have been defective.

Installing new on on Monday.

Hopefully he’s covering the cost. Free standing or not, you have to have a level base. But id have to agree in this instance that there wasnt much weigh to crack it of it were a bad foundation.

I am confused by your pictures….looks like two different tubs. Anyway, as far as I am concerned, any bathtub that won’t hold a tub full of water without breaking, is defective/
