Howdy everyone. I have my back yard with larges portions of dead grass after that brutal stretch of July/August of heat and little water.

Location: New Orleans area
Grass type: St. Aug (with some Bermuda I think creeping in)

I am curious as to the best/quickest/healthiest way to begin getting the grass to where it was.

Should I spread some dirt/sand/mulch on the dead areas and water regularly? Get a mulcher, flatten it out and add new sod?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

I have the same issue, I pulled out all of the dead grass, exposing the ground. I then put sandy topsoil over each spot, then fertilized the whole yard and will be sure it’s watered by me or by rain twice per week.

This was the same approach I was thinking. I did this to get the grass good the first time, but did no research if this was a good plan and figured I'd come here and see what the expert think.

Thanks

I believe a lot of yards are now experiencing a double whammy. First the drought just about killed the grass, it started to come back but sod web worms are now taking over. I have large dead spots that should have started to come back with the recent rains but they are dead to the dirt and spreading. I mowed last night and moths were everywhere.

Chinch bugs killed my entire back yard this summer. Will have to re-sod. Tough year for lawns. I’m done with St Aug.

With St. Aug, you must treat it every 3 months with both Disease X, and Bug B Gone. If you do this, like clockwork, you will not have these problems.

Take out dead areas and spread a peat moss/compost mix

This is what I’m thinking to do. Any luck or tips from getting St Aug to grow from seed?

I believe you have to sod or use plugs for St Aug
