It doesn't look THAT stuck. And how the hell do you get stuck on that hard packed shale?

Because the truck was traveling on a scree field. It looks hard packed but it’s actually a very loose collection of rock that acts like sand.

Seems like an almost impossible task at this point.

In Idaho, I've seen three or four guys carry everything out on dirtbikes.

One guy with a comealong. One guy with anchor stakes. One with straps and hammers.

If you can get an anchor, you have enough pulleys, enough patience... You can move anything.

None of my toys, Side x side, Jeep, 4-wheeler etc are equipped for rocks. My bucket list is Moab, UT but I’m not about to take my own rigs out there.

A stock side by side on some rockabillys can get you over and up things that make ZERO sense.

I did poison spider on a STOCK yamaha rhino :lol. Lots of controlled wrecks.

I have a 2023 Bronco that I took to Off Rodeo in Moab and then hit trails afterwards. I have been stuck often enough in a 4WD to know better than to go out without recovery gear. I have traction boards, shovel, tow strap, hard and soft shackles, snatch blocks, kinetic rope, tree saver straps and I carry 3 UHMWPE recovery ropes. Along with all that I have a Wyeth Scott power puller (6,000 dead lift, 12,000 lb. pull using snatch block) with me since I don't have a winch mounted yet. Offroad recoveries can be very expensive. Buying recovery gear is cheap by comparison. The Wyeth Scott is the most expensive thing I own. Costs as much as a cheap winch but I use it to pull down trees and pull my tractor out when it gets stuck, so I didn't buy it just for recovery. I would probably still carry it even if I had a winch as it allows you to pull from any angle you can get an anchor point. Using it along with a winch would make off camber pulls safer as it could be used to stabilize the vehicle.

Some thoughts
1) No matter what vehicle you drive sooner or later it will get stuck.
2) Get information on the area and trails. His first mistake was driving a vehicle on a hiking trail.
3) Don't go out without being prepared to get stuck.
4) Use good judgement. If it looks sketchy get out and walk it and plan a line.
5) Don't hesitate to turn around if it is beyond your or your vehicles capabilities.

I found my old go-pro footage of doing that portion of Black Bear Pass but it’s not linking correctly.

Can you upload your video to YouTube and post it here? Would love to see the whole thing!

I came across a couple of Bear Pass runs done by TFL one in a Jeep JK and one in a Gladiator and some of the sections are heart pounding to say the least.

TFL: Jeep JK - Black Bear Pass run

TFL: Jeep Gladiator Black Bear Pass run

I have to say, the Gladiator made it look easy.

They dubbed it a "mission" and it reads like a SEAL team was assembled and sent to rescue the vehicle.

It only takes 1 time to learn this. I chuckle at all the people who think just a winch is enough. There is only 100’ or so length on your winch, and only about 85’ of it is usable. Hopefully you can find somewhere within 85 feet to save yourself.
