Would The Righteous Gemstones been a better drama?

I binged 2 seasons this weekend and as much as I liked the show, I kept wondering what if it was done in the same style as Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul.
For the most part the story lines have been good, but the college humor seems to make some scenes fall flat.

Well, there would be no Uncle Baby Billy in that case. Or he would be so different that it would hardly count.
Also Judy is an amazing comedic character, and her relationship with BJ is the second funniest part of the show.

Hollywood barely even makes comedies anymore, and you want to take maybe the best, funniest one on TV and turn it into a drama?

Let me be clear….I do enjoy the show as it is. Baby Billy is hilarious. The story lines are good.
I was a huge fan of shows like Breaking Bad. I think Gemstones could use the same story lines with a dramatic/suspenseful tone.

nah - the show is great as is because the comedy is juvenile - but it showcases the immaturity of the Gemstone kids. I do not think it would be nearly as good as anything other than a Comedy.

A drama about a family of charlatan preachers would be great... or you could just watch Joel Olsteen or other prosperity gospel folks and see it unfold in real life.
But the idea could be good... just NOT with the Gemstones. I mean, it would basically be Empire or Succession, but with preachers instead.

I understand what you are trying to say, and I agree a show with the premise of TV charlatan preacher family as a drama could be really good if done right...
But man too few comedies are even made anymore. We need to celebrate the few good ones

I've said this before on here as a PK (preacher's kid) this show rings so incredibly true and even though it makes fun of the business of religion and mega-churches it also has a lot of heart and at some point there is a sincere and honest commitment to trying to live up to the principle
Baby Billy reminds me of my dad of course my Dad is not as over the top
it just cracks me up how familiar so many of the characters in that show are to me
