Picked this up recently and going through the re-watch since its initial premiere. Been 20 years, and it's an OK watch still. Kinda fun to laugh at how dated some things are.

Leon was having a hard go at it

Really would've liked a 2nd season but, the NFL had to get it canceled.

Playmakers series is on youtube. LINK

I listened to a radio interview by Jim Rome(I think it was Rome) with Cuba Gooding and they talked about Omar, brother of Cuba.

Rome asked him if his brother visited sick kids the hospital so he could steal their drugs.

This was the era of espn when they were really throwing everything at the wall and hoping it stuck. Some stuff did (see Pardon the Interruption and Around the Horn, Cold Pizza which later became First Take, etc)

And some didn't. They had gameshows and live house bands on SC that were huge flops and were heavily into original content. This is also very shortly after Disney bought them and they became a 'let's sell stuff for the shareholder value' type of brand.

They made Playmakers and the Dale Sr TV movie and a bunch of other stuff. Word always was the NFL despised the Playmaker show and told ESPN to kill it or they would frick them over with the next NFL TV rights negotiations.

After 1 season, Playmakers was dead.

Yet, they let Dwayne Johnson make Ballers. I am still convinced the entire show was dedicated to saying FU Trump lol

They made a bunch of movies in that period.

Junction Boys movie
Bobby Knight movie
Dale Sr movie
Pete Rose movie

You had Playmakers and The Bronx is Burning series about Yankees. Wonder how much money they spent on all that stuff

The junction boys movie was unintentionally hilarious.

Which was lame.

This show could be made now and still successful imo.

Stories within a bigger story, many perspectives from all walks of life involving football. Great shite.

HBO wasn't/isn't an NFL media partner though...

You don’t think they had to sign off on the use of the NFL logos, names, etc

They didn't use any of those, was fictional franchises and such.

Was similar, team you were following was the cougars, and they sorta had Carolinas color scheme.

Wasn't talking about ballers, you brought that show up. That show can be made because the NFL doesn't air games on HBO. However they associate on ESPN. Playmakers didn't use real franchises and the NFL was still angry.

It was an era when ESPN was shitting money and trying to expand beyond sports—emphasizing the “Entertainment” in ESPN. They even had live music during the 5 p.m. Sportscenter.

They also jerked themselves pretty hard during their 25th year with a bunch of list/ranking shows focused on the previous 25 yrs.

I’m watching ballers right now, and they definitely used team names and logos.

Loved Stump the Schwab.

Looking back I was entirely too young to be watching Playmakers (11) but I remember loving it. Still remember the scene with the guy faking the piss test after smoking crack.
