take the filter out of your return air
frick that. Replace the air filter. You don't know if your inside coils are causing the problem because they are dirty and you'd just make them dirtier.

Go to Walmart and buy a window unit.

Have you tried this?
Turn on the blower (no ac). Run it until the unit thaws.
Pull out your air filter and leave it out for now.
After the unit thaws, run it and check the temp at the return and at a register. Ideally you want 15 degrees difference but as long as you’re getting colder air out then what’s going in you should cool down enough to not combust….eventually

And clean your inside and outside coils. You can get the self rinsing coil cleaner for inside. That way you don’t have to introduce a lot of water for rinsing.
Outside I use Dawn,Simple Green and hot water. Followed by Clorox.
Ida packed my outside coil with wind blown leaf matter. Solid.

Window units are fantastic for precision cooling of your groin area.

Turn your thermostat up high and turn the fan switch on…while it thaws out you get cool air. After it thaws out, return to normal operating mode. This might get you through the weekend.

Pour some Clorox down the evaporation pipe.

Stupid Walmart inventory management.
They probably have the heaters out like they have the Halloween decorations out now and the. Christmas decorations in October.

Yes to above along with hosing/rinsing down the outside coils to get them cleaner.

I would not leave filter out, but even if filter says change every 90 days & it’s just been close to a month I would change filters. I would also change to a filter with a low filtering rating at least temporarily.

Those portable units that you can roll from room to room work great also.

I highly recommend having a portable AC unit as a backup. They do a remarkable job. Way better than a window unit.
Living in a location that gets unbelievably hot, not having AC is not an option.

It's probably that whole Georgia thing.

Any lightning in your area recently? Someone I know had that issue last month after a strike and it, allegedly, fried the "control board"...

so far in this thread we’ve had geniuses recommend both $100 window unit , and $200 window unit.
These things don’t exist today. This was years ago.

Yes they do.

If so, you dont want that one. It will be the size of a shoebox. $300 minimum for an acceptable small window unit.
Go ahead and post links to the $100/$200 units you’d recommend to OP to cool his home

There are 5,000 BTU units all over Home Depot's website. I didn't recommend him attempting to cool a 3,000 square foot house. Cool off one room such as the living room, not get the room down to 65 degrees.
