There seems to be an unusually high number of near misses at airports of late. Have they lowered the qualifications to meet an ideological goal or something?

San Diego airport close call between private jet, Southwest plane prompts federal investigation

A Cessna Citation business jet was told to abort a landing and circle around because the Southwest jet was still on the runway, the FAA said. An air traffic controller cleared the private let to land and then told the Southwest plane to taxi to the same runway and wait for approval to take off.

That airport has only 1 runway. I could see how a close call could happen there

seems like that would make it easier to avoid.
plane coming in, look at the runway, nope, it's occupied, wait a few minutes.

I don't know. There's a lot of stuff going on in one small area.

Not much information in the article, but go arounds aren’t unusual when the same runway is used for departures and arrivals.

It appears that controller forgot she had only told southwest to line up and wait and not takeoff. Possibly the reroute on another jet waiting for takeoff distracted her.

It seems like the process should be a little more systematic/rigorous and fail safe than the ATC having to remember which planes they told to do what.

chick was probably busy working on her latest tik tok video, forgot who was where and just guessed.

Shortage of air traffic controllers & pilot turnover probably to blame.

That’s exactly what happened. The surveillance system triggered a warning and she sent the citation around.

News of the incident. YT
I would have to hear the audio ,but looks like the Citation was cleared to land and Southwest was on the runway for a line up and wait formely known as a taxi in position and hold. My guess controller tried to sqeeze an aircraft between a departure and arrival and misjudged it. Again this is a guess on how the news presented it and depending on how early it was caught and if the controller took the appropriate action depends on how big a deal it is. They have one runway so I am sure they push it ,but sometimes controllers try to push it and fail. I have gotten ballsy with same runway opposite direction takeoffs before ,but you have to know your capabilities, the rules, and where your aircraft are at all times.

Last weekend the Pilot must have lied to us. We sat at the gate for an hour and half waiting on the 2nd runway to put us in Queue. The 1st runway wasn’t long enough for the weight of the plane to take off.
Edited to add that a ton of construction is going on there and adding another terminal. Traffic was terrible.

You sure San Diego? San Diego only has 1 runway. I don't know why a pilot would need to lie about that.

Just confirmed it with my wife to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. He specifically said the weight of our plane was too heavy for our current runway so we needed to taxi and get in queue for the other runway. Almost missed our connection in ATL. They had already bumped my wife and our luggage was in the next plane to our destination.

Yes it was San Diego. Now I’m about to call Delta and ask why our Pilot lied to us!

And we haven't had a commercial airline crash in over 20 years. Hope this isn't a sign of what's to come.

Petco Park is a great place to watch baseball. I'm jealous.

He wasn't still on the runway, he was told to line up and wait. That means he goes from the "hold short" position to the end of the runway to prepare for take-off.
The pilot and FO definitely should have made sure it was clear but flying out of San Diego on 27 the sight lines are not always great.
The controller should be fired - she told the SWA to line up and wait just after she cleared the company jet to land. BS mistake could have been tragic. Unacceptable.
The incompetent controller also had another aircraft on final behind the corporate. She definitely doesn't have a clue.
Interestingly enough the corporate was owned by a grocery chain out of Iowa.

Southwest was on the runway. That’s what lineup and wait means.

The cloud ceilings were reported at 1100’. They wouldn’t have seen much.

What she did happens all the time, every day at every airport. It sounds like she got distracted reading an amended clearance to another plane and forgot to clear SW to takeoff. But clearing planes to line up and wait while other aircraft are cleared to land happens all the time.
