JUST IN: Oliver Anthony shares a verse from the Bible in his first public appearance since going viral for his ‘Rich Men North of Richmond’ song.

“Before we start singing, and I mean we, 'cause I hope y'all are gonna be singing too. I just had something I felt compelled to share with you.”

“This is in Psalms, Psalms 37, 12 - 20. The wicked plot against the righteous and nash their teeth at them. But the Lord laughs at the wicked for he knows their day is coming. The wicked draw the sword and bend the bow to bring down the poor and needy, to slay those whose ways are upright.”

“But their swords will pierce their own hearts and their bows will be broken. Better the little that have righteousness than the wealth of many wicked. For the power of the wicked will be broken, but the Lord upholds the righteous. The blameless spend their days under the Lord's care and their inheritance will endure forever. In times of disaster, they will not wither and in days of famine, they will have plenty. But the wicked will perish.”

“Though the Lord's enemies are like the flowers of the field, they will be consumed and they will go up in smoke.”

Glad he didn't quote Matthew 22:21, that would have been awkward...

Matt 22:18

But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?

Because thats the whole point of the song, isnt it?. Rich men wanting more by devising a system that takes from the working, while they sit on their asses requiring more. Hypocrites, right?

I don't see how that changes his statement that we should render to Caesar what is Caesars.

Oh, absolutely. But Christianity isn't a political doctrine. Jesus was here to teach humanity how to have a relationship with him, not how to build governments that, ultimately, would turn to dust.

I love the song and its message. I'm just not sure how you can connect it to the teachings of Christ.

Jesus and the Bible both have quite a lot to say about the rich and powerful, especially those who used that wealth and power to serve themselves and evil. Maybe yours is different.

You are so correct.

Matthew 22:21, when read in isolation, is perhaps one of the most misunderstood verses in Christian scripture when it comes the nature of man’s relationship with the State and God.

The Pharisees and the Herodians believed they had laid a trap for Jesus by forcing him to denounce the sovereignty of Caesar by renouncing Roman taxes and running afoul of Roman authorities. Yet Jesus outwitted them:

“Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not?” But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? Show me the coin used for the tax.” When they handed him a Roman coin, he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?” “Caesar’s,” they replied. Then he said to them, “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”

Jesus — speaking in allegorical language — here is not saying we should blindly follow the dictates of Caesar’s law but instead is highlighting the temporal nature of Caesar’s realm compared to God’s eternal realm.

Yes, they interfere with forming a proper relationship with him. He doesn't argue for any economic or political system that spreads wealth around.

So again, he speaks of how to form and maintain a relationship with him. Not which economic or political systems we as humans need to install.

You don't know jack shite. This guy records and sings at his house, no one in the music industry has helped him do a damn thing. He's just a middle to lower class American like the millions that are listening to his music.

Yes, so why quibble over gold coins that, in the blind of his eternal eye, will be dust?

People shouldn't be focusing on political systems, they should be focusing on their relationship with God.

Found earlier in the book of Matthew
quote:

A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things

Our political system has left point A that Jesus ascribed to, and is now on a runaway train to point B

All the rich men north of Richmond, are mostly bringing forth evil things. And they are fairly easy to spot at this point. America was not founded on that. At all.

So you are suggesting that someone is going to find a way to profit off a well-crafted song that has gone viral because it speaks directly to the political mood of a large swath of American citizens who increasingly feel dispossessed by the reigning political establishment?

Wow! What A Newsflash!

Most evangelicals won’t even mention imprecatory psalms in silent prayer. Our favorite new Virginia Weirdbeard just called down hellfire on God’s enemies at a country music concert.

I hope he stays by the stuff.

I’m saying that y’all are saying “omg he’s literally me” but he was singing covers on tik tok and YouTube under a different name before this. He’s not a “workin man” he lives on a big ranch in Richmond which I assume is a hcol area

Somebody put money into this to get the ball rolling. This guy is as fake as Zach Bryan. They’ve been doing this in other genres for years where the industry finds a guy on YouTube, curate an image, record an eerily professional seeming video of a guy and a guitar and then put a million bot hits on it to get it to the top of the algorithm. Nothing is organic anymore
