My water tank heater is getting to that age where I’m starting to think about replacing it and was thinking of going the tankless route. Anybody got the tankless heater and how do you like it?

Seems like electric tankless would suck. If they dont suck they would eat a ton of power.

Natural gas FTW

Dont do electric. We have a tankless gas heater and it's great. Especially during hurricane season lol

I had a tankless GAS one at the previous house that I loved.

A tankless electric one just seems like a really bad idea both in costs and in efficiency.

I would when I needed to replace… but I’d have to replace my electrical panel.

So no dice.

I will have a gas one in my next house I build though.

they've been pretty common in SA for years, I don't know of anyone around here who's tried them in their home yet

Electric tankless is a major power consumer. Look into what kind of power you need in place. Lots more than a water tank usually.

Electric is the only option in our neighborhood. Sounds like I’m going to have to stick with the tank again.

Do you even have room in your breaker box? The larger ones require at least 4 x 40 AMP double pole breakers. Not to mention the cost of the 8 gauge wire you will need.

I switched from electric tank to gas tankless. Put a recirculation valve on the far end of the system under a sink and it keeps the warm water primed. I couldn't be happier.

I haven't heard great things about electric tankless. If that is your only option, then definitely put in a recirculation valve. It will still be way better than a tank.

Check power consumption.
I could see a tankless electric consuming less power than an electric tank heater.

I’d investigate that.

I love gas tankless water heaters, but a whole home electric tankless makes no sense or cents.

Gas tankless is the only way to go. We have two Noritz when we built our house 14 years ago. Never been worked on. Not even once.

This. Just make sure you have a competent plumber who understands in advance how to adjust for water pressure before switching out gas tank to gas tankless. The latter can be an issue if they don't really know what they're doing - dealing with this currently when washing dishes and the sprinklers on outside.

Supposedly they say once a year you're suppose to do a full flush maintenance. Not sure how true this is, I've been told by others that they've never done this. Had mine installed only several months ago.

Yep.

A tankless undoubtedly consumes way more power to operate than a tank heater.

However the tank heater has to maintain the temp for 24 hours. The tankless is only a fraction of that time.

Tankless is the way to go. But I have gas...can't really speak for electric ones.

I once had a friend who installed those for a living. He said it was a very tankless job...

I hear that there's "endless hot water" from the tankless but I imagine you have to have a really small household for that to happen.
