Weight loss drug (Semaglutide) cut major adverse cardiovascular events by 20 percent

in study
Will half the country be on it when production catches up?
“The popular but expensive weight-loss drug, semaglutide (Wegovy), significantly reduced major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) by 20% when given to patients, compared with those receiving placebo, in the pivotal SELECT trial, with more than 17,000 enrolled people with overweight or obesity and established cardiovascular disease (CVD), but no diabetes.
The finding should fuel improved patient access to this glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonist weight-loss agent that has historically been hindered by skepticism among US payers, many of whom have criticized the health benefits and cost effectiveness of this drug in people whose only indication for treatment is overweight or obesity.“

The negative side effects will come out in a few years
Nothing that works this well comes without a price

It’s the American way. Don’t work on yourself just pop a pill.

Yeah have read that people get back to their eating ways when get off it. The question will be will whatever side effects they find be worth staying on it like a blood pressure pill

I am cynical about it, too. Just seems like such a shock to the system there has to be major side effects

For most people, those side effects will likely pale in comparison to the side effects of being obese.

While there are always side effects, how do they stack up against someone losing 30 or 50 lbs? That's a pretty damn big health benefit.

I agree. If losing a lot of weight helps the person become more motivated to change their lifestyle and habits to help keep it off after they stop taking the injection, I don't see why anyone should be against it.

This gives me pause though:
SELECT is sponsored by Novo Nordisk, the company that markets semaglutide (Wegovy). Sattar is a consultant to several companies that market GLP-1 receptor agonists, including Novo Nordisk and Lilly, but has had no involvement in SELECT.

I almost died from an adverse reaction to semaglutide.

So not being a big fatass makes you less likely to have a heart attack? Who would have ever guessed.

Well I can tell you for a fact already what the negative effects of being morbidly obese are. 20% reduction in MACE is crazy.

Is this the one that makes people shite themselves or is that the other one?

My understanding is that unless you change your eating habits, the user will just gain the weight back if they get off.
Drug companies will have a client for life which is usually the goal.

Inventing a pill is work enough.

It is expensive as hell if insurance won't cover it.

Well yea. That's what happens when you consume 6k calories a day.
