It's a seven hour drive and the shortest route goes through ATL and Orangeville, which I've never found attractive.
If you want to add a half hour, you can go through Greenville and spend the night there. Greenville is a really nice city. Stay at the Poinsettea, have dinner at Rick Erwin's, pick up some useless but fun stuff at Mast General Store. Walk around downtown for a while.
The next day, have lunch at Palmetto Pig on your way to CHS.

I mean you literally have Atlanta and Augusta. You could also detour to Columbia.

Greenville is the move but it isn’t on the way
Could just go down to Beaufort and make a longer drive day 1 but see a cool town

I guess Columbia? Augusta doesn’t seem worth stopping 51 weeks out of the year. Maybe Oconee outside of ATL?
The southern route through Montgomery heads toward savannah. Adds some time though.

Greenville or just drive straight through to Charleston.

Would drive straight through, Charleston is better than anywhere in between

According to Google Maps it's half hour out of the way. If he has an extra day to kill, that's not bad.
Just make sure OP watches his speed between Columbia and Charleston on the freeway. Seems like one big speed trap.
