Kids getting held back for sports

I know it’s a very common thing for private high schools and public school districts especially in small towns/suburbs to do.
My question is why are parents down with it? Why would a parent of a 5th grade kid agree to hold their kid back so that when they’re a senior in high school they can help the program?

I just think it’s crazy to delay your kids life a year for some high school glory. I’m all for holding kids back who need social and emotional development, I think a lot of boys could benefit in grade school from starting school a year later. But holding a kid back who doesn’t need it specifically to help them athletically is some selfish arse parenting

I’m 33 and this was a thing when I was young.
It raised alarms for me then and as an adult I think you should probably get beat half to death if you go this route.
The frick are the Yankees gonna want to do with your graduating 19.8 year old son?
You know what they like? They like fake arse 15 year old Dominican kids. They don’t want your overgrown 19 year old 3rd baseman white kid.

The rule of thumb is a kid should graduate high school at the age of 18 no matter what athletic ability they have

Its lame as hell. You got a kid that is graduating at 19 you should be ashamed unless they have a legit disability.

I wish I got held back. I was kind of a late bloomer and graduated when I was still 17. When I was a Senior there were juniors older than me.
I have a few friends that have held theirs back. I am not really for or against doing it for my kids.

There's a local travel ball organization that gets their parents to hold kids back. a lot of kids on their teams will graduate when they are 19. It's pathetic.

See you started early, I think that’s a mistake as well in most situations (obviously it depends on the kid). My youngest sons birthday is in June, so basically he’ll either be one of youngest or one of the oldest in his grade. We are going to start him late and he’ll be one of the oldest, otherwise he’d graduate high school at 17. I think is makes sense for boys to start late in situations like that, but to hold back a kid in middle school who is the proper age so they can develop more athletically is a little crazy.
