Goldfish for Bait

I remember as a kid people saying goldfish were great crappie bait, but it was illegal (GA).
At some point, the law changed in GA and now they have them at my local bait shop. But they aren't the little ones, they sell the big ones. Are these for catfish? Bass? Both?

Goldfish or Black Salties? Either way, I've always had better luck with shad or skipjack (can't catch them here).
I know a guy that's too lazy to get up early to catch shad for stripers so he bought some Black Salties. Not only did he not catch any striper, he caught nothing. They're supposed to be hearty and live well in less than ideal situations.

The big goldfish are great catfish bait. They have a strain of shiners now that are gold. My uncle owns a pretty big bait outfit in NWLA that sells them all. He said the gold shiners work great for sac a lait on some lakes and terrible on others and no one really knows why.

Used them for flatheads in the 80s a few times. They would swim for days and nothing, zero, nada. Same for carp. Nothing beats a bluegill on a trot line!

I just am a true believer in cast netting shad, or catching bluegill or skipjack (if they are in the waters in your area. They are just better options. It might be a hassle but it's the price to pay to catch fish. I'm getting ready to go net shad right now.

I remember when it was a no no.

Wouldn’t they get soggy and just dissolve?

I remember when it was not allowed. Never understood why unless they thought that they could become an invasive species. I didn't even know that it is legal now.

It’s never been illegal to use goldfish as bait in Louisiana but most people believe it is or was at some point
It’s one of those myths that has been passed down over time that keeps getting spread

This video they use monster goldfish for monster bass. I wish I had access to this lake.

I used goldfish, especially the fancy fantailed goggle eyes kind, when I lived in Oklahoma. The clear lakes in north east and central OK made them effective for bank fishing. Caught all kinds of bass and other stuff.
Biggest crappie I ever caught was on a fancy goldfish up there. Could fit a beer can in his mouth easily. (I don’t carry scales)

Flatheads are one of the few catfish that actually prefer live bait, most others are scavengers. Every large flathead I've ever caught has been on live bream.

After thinking about it more, I think you're really overthinking catfishing. Net some gizzard shad (or skipjack on a sabiki rig if they have them in your location). Keep them in a good bait tank or on ice. They're a time tested way to catch blues. If you're targeting flatheads, catch bluegill or get one of those bluegill traps.
I never buy any type of bait at a bait shop. If I go catfishing on a whim and have limited time, chicken breasts from any grocery store are a great bait for blues.
When I'm targeting big blues from October to January, I drift/drag baits. A planer board on each side of the boat to get a good spread, the third rod straight out the back dragging and 4th rod suspended straight out the back about 2 cranks off the bottom.
A drift sock helps with keeping the back of the boat from swing around from wind and current and helps you maintain a good, long drift in the depth and area you're targeting.

Right now on the reservoir I fish, the big old boss are up the two rivers and won't come back until the water temps cool. You can catch some really good eater blues and channels, but the trophy blues like the Texas state record which was caught at Texoma are in both rivers.

Carp live much better in the river currents.

I bet they work better in places with clearer water. The best flathead fisherman on our lake used monster bream like way way bigger than you would think.
