Wondering if the Mets just keep him if they can't get what they want. Not sure if JV can force them to trade him. You'd figure he wants out now. At 40, he doesn't have that many post seasons left and it's not happening in NY this year.

Lot of posturing going on. I think they get Verlander back right before the deadline. He can box in the Mets by refusing to waive the no-trade clause. Mets have to want get something for a 40-year-old pitcher and they can fill his spot in the off-season in free agency. Astros need an arm. They wait each other out until right before time expires.

ETA: Braves, Dodgers, Orioles and Padres are also supposedly interested but I wonder if that’s the Mets floating that to squeeze more from the Astros.

Well, the cold hard truth is that if JV had the value he has been contractually obligated to, he would be gone already, like Scherzer

He doesn't

Nobody wants to pay it as written. All those teams you mention want no part of it, including the Astros.

Like Jwho is saying, the Astros and JV have all the leverage. All the others just don't want it to happen, but if it does, they want the Astros to pay heavy.

I don't think we will, if it even happens at all

@Feinsand
The Mets and Astros appeared to be closing in on a deal for Justin Verlander late Monday night, per source, but “things have really cooled down” today. The sticking point appears to be about the players that would go back to the Mets, not the money in the deal.

it's funny to see how fast the mets fell apart. Lots of posturing last off-season only to fire sale

JV is a #3 starter making top 6 MLB ace money. Also an incredibly shaky post season record. The move makes zero sense.

And the teams mentioned could be the Mets over representing that interest simply to get the Astros to up their offer. There’s still 5 hours to go. The wild card in this is how badly does Crane want Verlander back. If he wants him badly enough, it will get done, even if the Astros give up too much in money or prospect/player capital.

I’m not saying that’s how it should be but we’ve seen over the last year that Crane gets involved when he wants and does what he wants, general manager and sometimes common sense be damned.

What a weird take considering how much of the Scherzer contract the Mets had to eat in their deal lol

Multiple front office sources confirm White Sox will trade anyone except Luis Robert.

We should call for a Cease fire on JV.

Why not both?

I'd give up Gilbert for Cease over Verlander.

If they were serious about winning this year that would be the play.

Cease hasn't been great. And most of the time hasn't even been good.

It only makes sense if Cohen gets raped again, like he did with almost every if not every offseason signing

Other than that, no way we do it.

Not on the heels of the LMJ, Brantley, Abreu, and Montero abortions
