About 10 years ago I bought a boat trailer for a jon boat from Academy right before hunting season. Ran it all hunting season with the temporary tag or whatever came with it and never followed up on getting it registered/tagged. I don’t remember if I ever received the title from Academy but I’m sure I did, regardless I don’t have it.

Does anybody know what steps I need to take to obtain a duplicate title and get it registered?

If you never went to the license bureau to get it in your name all Academy issued was a "Certificate of Origin" and this can't be duplicated. You may be up the creek without a paddle.

Are you positive it couldn’t be duplicated or copied? I would think Academy would have a record possibly?

I bought a trailer from Lowe's. After paying I ask for my docs so I could register the trailer. The girl looked confused and then said oh yeah we have that paperwork in a folder. I'll get it. She pulled out a random Cert or Origin from about 20 and said here you go

I had to tell her about trailer vin #s and matching paperwork

Absolutely. And tell them the trailer has been on private land and never used on the road regardless of what you’ve done with it.

Call your local justice of the peace to get an affidavit of possession if the OMV gives you the runaround. I have had better luck going through one of the privately owned state sanctioned authorized title dealers vs the OMV.

Prayers sent because you gonna need them lol.

I purchased a boat/trailer from Oklahoma. They don't title their trailers. There is a form you fill out and go to a state trooper place and they inspect it for you.

I'd keep my eyes out for a cheap junk trailer with a title and just use that title. I've gone down this road before with State Trooper VIN stamps, OMV, affidavit, etc. and I just ended up buying a new trailer because it is a major PITA to get a trailer title in Louisiana. I'll never buy another trailer of any kind that doesn't come with a title in hand.

My fear is that petty LDWF agents walk through a boat launch parking lot checking vins and plates. I know it’s a far fetched thought but it’s my first thought.
However I do like the idea.

I had to do this, then bring it to the state police for an inspection. you will need an appointment. Then i got the paperwork to get it titled. pain in arse

I am same situation with a utility trailer. Half value of new to register now. I would go to a private DMV place to see what you need to move forward. I legit don't really use the trailer.

Rip all the identification off the trailer
Go to the DMV and tell them you want to register a home made boat trailer
They'll give you a new VIN
Stamp that into a piece of metal and rivet it to the trailer
Profit?
