I have been following LSU since the early to mid 80's. Was football being played before that? Of coarse it was, since I have followed this program it has been hit or miss.Top talent was not beating our door down,we were not horrible,we were not consistent either...7-4(80) 3-7-(81) 9-2-1(85) finishing in the top 10 that year,10-1-1(87) 4-7(89)5-6(90)10-2(96)3-8(99).Saban came in and changed the attitude of the program,we were the Chicago Cubs of the SEC,opponent's loved to come to Baton Rouge to get Cajun Cuisine and a win or two. With Nick we went from Mickey Mouse to Darth Vader! The attitude was LSU was a physical program,50 Blitzes the whole 9,life was good for LSU,we went from the kid on the back of the comic book getting sand kicked in our face,to dishing out the PUNISHMENT!Saban is the Purple and Gold Tiger,I read some of you guys wont give the guy his due on changing the attitude of the Program,he made people RESPECT the Purple and Gold, get beside your personal feelings and be honest with your self. Thats why Miles is catching so much hell, because the bar has been set and we wont accept anything less than mediocre anymore.Wins and loses are addicting and you can over look the small things when they get scarce. Miles has his hands tied,he looked out for Perrilloux every way possible, but the kid did not want to do right, now he has to face a fully loaded Florida with a young QB,and a younger QB behind him. Remember JR was a talent and he had to learn the SEC was no joke,JL is no different. We are a below average team at this time, and thats all it is.Miles will right the ship,GEAUX TIGERS!

By the mid-80s I had been following LSU football for over 20 years. And what you saw as normal in the 80s was very much abnormal for people taking a longer view - the up and down seasons, sliding down, down, downward into the 90s. I picked up under the last year or so of Dietzel, when LSU was at the top of its game, and continued under Mac, who kept the Tigers winning. Then the bottom fell out and Mac was sacked (it was time for him to retire, but not that way). LSU entered an era of instability that was only righted under Saban. Now it is starting to look to me as if Coach Miles is less a Saban trend continuation and more the start of a new roller coaster era for LSU fortunes. As a longer term fan, I dread this possiblity and hope I am wrong in what I think I am seeing. Too much like DiNardo/Hallman/Archer years this year, to suit my tastes.

Good post. I agree with this and it amazes me how many LSU fans don't give Saban credit for our recent success and want to erase him from the LSU history book. This year I see a team that is not agressive, that hasn't had that "swagger" that we had in the past couple of years, that confidence that we are not going to fail. Its discouraging and I think Saban and Muschamp brought this to our team, at least our defense. I definitely think he can right the ship but we need to bring in some hard-nosed, old school, all about the fundamentals DC to run the show. I hate to say it but we might lose some recruits/commits but when we turn the D into a physical, agressive beast we will bring in the top notch players soon enough.

How quickly we forget the sins of St. Nick when our current Coach Miles stumbles. It's not time to jump ship yet.

Lest we not forget, while giving Saban credit for all of his good, we seemed to be able to tolerate his bad a lot more easily. Why is that?

Here is a short summary of the bad things that Nick accomplished that Miles hasn't.

Nick lost to Texas and Iowa in bowl games. Miles is undefeated so far.

Nick lost to UAB and Va. Tech. hello!

Nick won 75% of his games. Miles has won 80%.

Les had two back to back 10 win seasons. The first and only time it's been done in LSU Football History!

In December 1999, Saban accepted an offer from LSU to become their next head coach.

In 2000, the Tigers went 8–4 and won the Peach Bowl. The season was somewhat mired by several lopsided losses, including a 34–17 loss to the Auburn Tigers, a 13–10 loss to the UAB Blazers, and a 41–9 loss to the Florida Gators. Okay it was his first year, but those losses were ugly.

2001 – After a loss to the Ole Miss Rebels, the Tigers closed out the year with six straight wins, including a win over Tennessee in the 2001 SEC Championship Game, and a 47–34 win over Illinois in the 2002 Sugar Bowl. It was the first outright SEC championship for LSU since 1986, and the first time the Tigers had won the Sugar Bowl since 1968. Good year.

2002 – The season opened with high expectations, but a 26–8 loss at the hands of Virginia Tech raised serious questions about their outlook. LSU lost four of their last six games to close the season, including a 35–20 loss to Texas in the Cotton Bowl, and finished 8–5. We've got a chance to beat that record this year.

2003 – After the loss to Florida, LSU became national champions for only the second time in school history, and for the first time since Paul Dietzel and Billy Cannon led the Tigers to the 1958 National Championship. WOW! Thank you Nick.

2004 – LSU lost to the Iowa Hawkeyes in the Capital One Bowl 30–25. At the end of the 2004 season, Saban left LSU to coach the Miami Dolphins. Les has never lost a Bowl game at LSU.

Miles is a joke. Depite the National Championship, which I think was a fluke, he has continually deteriorated this program with a lack of discipline and aggressiveness. Say what you want, but people who hate me because of this are dumbassses, that don't know a damn thing about football. They are just cheerleaders who don't know what is best for this program. I would go as far to say, that if Miles doesn't hire a knew defensive coordinator next year, then his job will be on the line.

Yeah, he completely lacks in discipline. I wonder who kicked off one of the most talented players in the country? Couldn't have been him... he doesn't enforce discipline.

A lot of truth there, imo. Miles doesn't exude that confidence. The "Deer in the headlights" isn't so much the case anymore but still doesn't have that "confident" aura about him.

I agree with the substance about N.Saban, but please tell me
that when you said this, you were dreaming?

I couldn't agree more..finally someone who embraces rationale, not emotion when they speak. The fastest way to return to mediocrity is to jump back on the coaching carosel and to trash everything Saban/Miles have built. When you play in the SEC three things can happen..and two of them are bad. Who besides Bama, the Gators or Ole Miss can really say they are satisfied with the way things have played out? Sure, we had a lot of returning lettermen..but name one who had a record of sustained excellence or had the ability to take charge of a game like Dorsey, Flynn, Doucett, Russell, Bowe or dare I say it..Perrilloux. We will be back..and it will be with a very large chip on our shoulders.

Its kinda like having a girlfriend that was good for you,and once you split you will never say she was. But deep down inside you have to much pride to admit it.

tigerfan15.........you are entitled to your opinion, but that is all it is. You may be right but I am hoping not.

there are a lot of knowledgeable football people who disagree with your assessment. Next year will tell a lot.
