I am currently on vacation in the Georgia Smokies(Ellijay & Fort Mountain State Park) and the wife and I have talked about retiring up here or over at the base of Lookout Mountain near Trenton/Summersville.
Same here. The Jefferson area and the rest of the High Country of NC is absolutely beautiful!
Beautiful country and it's still the South in both culture and geography. Beckley is a great town.

Western NC would be my first choice

Watching Samantha Brown’s Places to Love travel show recently, I was surprised by how appealing Chattanooga, TN seemed. No plans to visit any time soon, but will include it in future itineraries to that area of the country. Certainly worth checking out.

My wife is from Tazewell, Virginia. Back in the day, the thing to do was graduate high school and leave. The place just had nothing to offer.
All her friends are moving back as they step into retirement. They have relatively low real estate costs, it's a nice quiet area with good people. On top of that, the climate is nice and the area is beautiful. I'll probably retire here locally but only because of family.

i went the opposite. moved to the PNW and i never realized how unhappy i was in louisiana and texas. i’ve been here a year and I still am in awe of the area every time i take a drive or go into the mountains. Which btw are only twenty minutes away from my home.
