Why are those features hard to get/find in a mesh system though? DDNS has been pretty standard (the config not the service) on entry level consumer routers for a couple decades, now they're paywalling it? Ad blocking is basically just a community-maintained dns blacklist. I don't know what they mean by "advanced security" but it makes it sound like their gear is insecure by default unless you subscribe.

Dunno. Adblocking is something typically only found on the OSS firmware like Tomato, DDWRT, OpenWRT and none of those support mesh products. You'd have to ask them why there is so little support for that.
