Do they not realize that soccer does national cups and champions league because those teams don't play each other during the season. I mean WTF? Everybody already plays everybody. It's called the regular fricking season.

The NBA is boring. We've seen a rough defensive era, a dunking era, and now a super offense and 3 point era.
I don't think the game has anywhere else to find creativity. People just dont grow up playing sports like they used to.
The NBA is competing with video games and gaming media now.

Yeah, if they really wanted this to emulate what the EPL is doing, you'd hold an "open" tournament that includes NBA G-League squads... which would be dumb.
It's already incredibly fricking stupid though that you already have an 82-game regular season, followed by a postseason tournament and now you're adding a contrived midseason tournament to it.

The Euro soccer tournaments all have characteristics that differentiate them from the primary domestic competition.
Suckers may fall for this contrived NBA Cup though. They may as well try because every regular season other than football does sorry ratings out of market.

Or invite Euro and Chinese squads. The games probably wouldn’t be very competitive, but at least there would be some distinguishing factor.

I'm just going off of whenever Silver said he wanted this to be like the FA Cup, which was such a stupid thing to say, because this is nothing even remotely close to the FA Cup.

This thread isn’t showing resistance to change. It’s showing resistance to a contrived, lazy cash grab.
In actuality, the NBA is the one afraid of changing anything that may impact the playoffs, so their “change” is just “Hey these aren’t just regular season games! They’re NBA Cup games!”

Yeah and it’s a shame because an FA Cup would be wildly entertaining for basketball, but it simply can’t exist in our closed pro sports system.
And the owners will never jeopardize that closed system, so we’re left with this idea that just arbitrarily calls some games important because they’re “cup games”.
