True story, I swear to God.
Some friends and I were in the Talladega infield for the 1976 Winston 500 and this dude came wandering up, filthy stinking dirty with no shirt or shoes. We struck a conversation with him and he said, “The last thing I remember I was tripping on LSD and I woke up here.”

I grew up about 20 minutes away and we used to go to the campgrounds and ride through at night. It was a mini Mardi Gras with the flashing and bead tossing and drinking.
Several years ago, they started locking the gates to the campgrounds at 9pm so nobody in or out. Not long after that, the backstretch grandstand was torn down because attendance had dropped so much. It's a shame you can't go experience that craziness anymore.
