Watching Young Guns II
Both Young Guns flicks are full of horseshite, but still tons of fun
I thought Jose was a completely made up dude, but after taking 8 minutes of my life to research on the super credible Wiki, I have decided that we all need a Jose Chavez y Chavez biopic
Obviously, Danny Trejo would portray him, at least in his elder years.
Who plays him as a young fella?
Danny CGI Trejo might be acceptable

I watched both YG movies in the theaters as a teen, and I've loved them since then. In the early 2000's after probably a thousandth rewatch, I started researching the true story of Billy the Kid and realized that YG was a very loosely based true story. The real stories of the events in the YG movies would make for awesome film if done right. Last night while watching YG 1, I told my wife how they gave the wrong deaths to the wrong characters (like Bowdre dying at the McSween house, which was really a 5 day battle) and Doc dying at Stinking Springs in YG 2 (it was actually Bowdre). Those movies got me obsessed with the old west, and I agree that Chavez would be a good character to explore. He was also a pretty big badass in real life.

I’m like you. Once I watched them as a kid, I did my own research about the Lincoln County wars.

They didn’t get every single historical detail correct, but they nailed the casting and put me in that time and place.

Other than some of the chase scene music in YG being straight out of the 80s, they’re well done westerns.

Always got a kick out of the fact that Charlie Sheen’s character was the razor edge that wouldn’t drink the peyote.

So what is the most acurate Billy the Kid film?

Chisum (1970)
Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973)
Billy the Kid (1941)
Dirty Little Billy (1972)
The Left Handed Gun (1958)

Is the TV documentary The Legend of Billy the Kid (1994) accurate?

Maybe one of the other ones Listed on wiki?

Pretty good short writeup on Jose Chavez y Chavez (on desertusa.com)

So much of Billy the Kid's story is based around rumor, legend, conjecture, and unreliable narrators that it's hard to say which is the most accurate. Just take all of them, average it out, and that's probably the closest you'll get.

He was a good looking kid, had a way with women, dressed like a dandy and was a left hander. People said he was fond of whistling sad ballads.

I'm always surprised or impressed by the rewatchability whenever I find YG rotating back through basic cable every few years.
