Stay the course

I’ve heard David Griffin use the term “build a program” on more than one occasion. I’ve never ran a billion dollar sports franchise so take what I have to say with a massive grain of salt lol but, if I were trying to build a program, personally I wouldn’t trade all my chips away to give myself a 2 year runway for success. Because what happens in 2 years if we trade for Dame? Nothings for certain but it’s hard for me to believe we’ll be in a better spot than we would be if we hadn’t distracted ourselves by the prospect of immediate satisfaction. The lakers for example. Pels Twitter seems to be foaming at the mouth for the chance to have a great team the next couple years and go through another 10 years of irrelevance and misery afterwards. Stay put. Use your picks. Develop them. Then as painful as it might be you trade the ones that worked out at their max value when it’s less attractive to have them on your pay roll and reload from the draft again. Yeah drafting guys can certainly be hit or miss but that’s why you get multiple Firsts in return for top tier talent. That’s the cycle. Sell high, buy low. Rinse and repeat. Program.
Hopefully all that made sense. Currently driving from home on the Northshore to Charlotte, NC and don’t really feel like going back and proofreading anything

I know we have a historical injury curse, and that curse hasn't spared this generation (leading to deflated expectations), but we're still in maybe the best position moving forward of any team in the NBA.
We have a legitimate star duo in Zion/BI with a trio likely (hopefully?) emerging this year with Trey. That is a LEGIT core for 10 years.
We have other pieces like CJ, Nance, Herb, and Jose, 3/4 are on bargain deals.
We have another potential young talent piece in Dyson.
We also still have a LOT of draft capital. We have all of our own picks and some LAL/MIL stuff. Go through the list of good-great teams who still have capital to make deals and the list is short. The market for an AD/Gobert/Durant style deal is drying up b/c so many teams have already blown their load. We have enough draft capital to go all-in TWICE, still, and that's ignoring if we include a young piece.
People want to blow our load for a super-old, aging/declining guy like Dame but if we want to make an all-in move, we need to wait on a real star with years left on the tread, namely Giannis, Embiid, or Luka.

Like where your head is at here. We dont need one of them tho. I would kill for Jaren Jackson Jr to be the 5 on this team

Well one of them would cost BI + super draft capital, but that's better than BI + draft capital for a 33 year old Dame Lillard

Exactly why I think we need to find a center in free agency or in future drafts but if you’re going to trade for one don’t overpay for Embiid. Not worth it at all to me.

I agree. Also I’d like to add that you can’t hold drafting Jax, Nickeil, or Kira against Griff and Trajon
Jax and Nickeil were big prospective swings that simply didn’t work out as they more than often do. If you ask me, Jax was actually on the right track until; like many great men, the wrong woman entered his life. It can be argued that Kira is a victim of circumstance as well.. Nickeil.. Nickeil is a great kid and teammate but seemingly couldn’t get out of his own head after he did something wrong or his shot didn’t fall the first time.
No need to comment on the 2021 draft
2022- extremely high on Dyson and the jury is still out on EJ. I do like what I’ve seen from EJ in regards to his attitude and they way he gets along with the other players on the team though.
I think we’re more than competent in the draft

You can hold Hayes/NWA against Griffin b/c we should have stayed at 4 and drafted Garland or, at worst, Hunter.
You don't trade down in the NBA

He got 2 firsts in the same draft in return. From a statistical perspective you take that deal 9/10 times. Plus he was operating from a position that Jrue was going to be a part of the team for a long time so I can see why he passed on Garland. You can MMQB that draft all you want but there’s no way that’s a mark against Griff

This isn't the NFL, bro.
The #4 pick is worth a metric frick ton more than the #8 pick and mid-1sts have little value (although this is starting to slowly change as basketball development continues at all levels due to analytics and opening up the game).

I said Garland or Hunter.

This was a live criticism.

It's a huge one, but not the worst (trying to sign Lowry/CP3 to insane deals)

Is your name Michael McNamara?

Lol dude everyone here agrees with their sentiment. The number 4 pick was probably the second best asset we got from the AD trade (after BI) and we traded it for 8 + a mid round. That’s just horrible value for the NBA draft. There’s a reason why so few people trade back without getting something good in return. You drop back to 8 to get a mid round pick? Thats like trading back for a bench player by value.

Jackson Jr. would be an insane fit on this team. He’s not a great rebounder for his size but he’s the best rim protector in the league along with Nic Claxton but he’s also a good 3 pt shooter. You could live with the rebounding if you got his offense along with his defense and rim protection. He is the new star and leader in Memphis, not Ja, much like us with BI now being the leader over Zion. Both Zion and Ja both really turned out to be two of the more immature players in the league.

You can't trust JJJ because (1) his huge leap defensively this year and (2) his major injury history.

Yeah if you are dropping back in that spot you get 8 and a good player (maybe not necessarily all star, but potentially down the line), someone who can start for you consistently.
As for the op, I agree that we are trying to build a team with long term aspirations, and we shouldn't be looking to trade that in for a 2 year window, especially now when we have YEARS ahead to change course and make that move.
Honestly if Zion, BI, and a frick ton of other players don't get injured the last 2 years, we had a shot of being potentially a wcf team. And with the youth on the team we can keep this up maybe another 10-12 years, so that's a very long window we have created.
You trade Zion or BI now for a 33yo who is going to start to decline in the next 2 years, you just blew up everything you were working towards. And to do it AND give up picks as some are suggesting we do is just doubling down on that 2 year window and making it very hard to recover from on the other side.
As it stands, you have YEARS ahead to flip BI or Zion when the time is right. That time is not now.

If we don’t make the playoffs not play in. Everyone has to go Griff, TL and Willie. Let’s hope “ run it back” goes well

Sometimes I think some of you posters just want to be a bad rebuilding lottery team because that'll give you "hope" and "excitement" for the future. Nothing gets some of you more excited than blowing up the team, front office, and staff. This is what a farm team mindset looks like. It's incredible how fast people are jumping to a rebuild.

Yeah it's pretty crazy. We have a core set for a decade that you KNOW can be a contender, but people want to trade it in for a MUCH shorter shot at winning now, potentially with the same players they complain about being injured.
