Friends,

Thanks to a wonderful suggestion by our friend on the Food Board, Degas, I will be traveling to the PNW later this summer to dine in a Shakey's Pizza, the last remaining one in Washington. I have never eaten Shakey's pizza so I am quite excited.

I will be traveling alone and will have four free days during the week there. I have already scheduled two days in the North Cascades NP, which will not take up the four days for which I am seeking your advice.

Here are several alternatives:
1. Rent a car and drive to Glacier. Or fly Alaska Air to Kalispell.
Pros:
-Glacier is one of the world's greatest hiking locations
-Peak season
-I have not been to Glacier in several years
-Inspired best Pendleton blanket ever made
Cons:
-I have never hiked Glacier alone nor have I ever hiked Glacier and not seen a Grizzly close up.
-All lodging in the park is taken at this time.
-Nine hour drive each way from Seattle/Hate flying to Kalispell

2. Rent a car and drive to Crater Lake
Pros:
-Prettiest water I have ever seen
-Good time of year
-Not far (2-3 hours) from Mt Shasta so could probably do Crater Lake and then summit Shasta if the weather works out.
-Lassen Volcanic National Park is just another 1.5 hours from Shasta. Pushing it, I think I could do one day at Crater Lake, hike Shasta, and then spend one day at Lassen, which I have never previously visited.
-Inspired best Pendleton blanket judged by color alone
Cons:
-7 hour drive from Seattle
-NPS lodging booked so far
-Not nearly the great hiking available there as Glacier

3. Oregon coastal road
Pros:
-Nice drive
Cons:
-I've done it before
-No great hiking

4. Rainier and Olympic
Pros:
-Least amount of driving
-Both are beautiful
Cons:
-Have done both
-Do not want to try to summit Rainier with such a tight schedule

5. Spend those four days in Seattle
Pros:
-Could eat at every decent pizzeria in Seattle
Cons:
-Seattle is fairly boring

Your suggestions may well determine what I do.

Sincerely,
TulaneLSU

How about visiting the San Juan Islands?

I’ve biked & hiked there, it was very nice.

Good luck in your travels.

Thanks again for your wonderful contributions herein.

Best regards of the day to you and yours.

Do Mt. Ranier again. Most people never go beyond the parking lot of the Paradise Inn but there are several other access points to the Park with lots of great trails. Scenery is great everywhere and it's a manageable drive from SEATAC. Then loop up to North Cascades from the east side.

Friend,

Uncle and I have summited Rainier together. I think near the top, I suffered just a hint of AMS, with a pretty intense headache. We had flown in from New Orleans and the next day were on the mountain. It is not a difficult mountain to climb, but I think HACE kills more climbers there than any other American mountain because it is not imposing and so many do not adjust to the altitude. Though it does not look it when you arrive, it is still a good 14,000 elevation.

soccerfut, that is a great suggestion. I will pray about it and let you know what I decide. Thank you for your contributions and kind words.

HoustonGumbeauxGuy, Mother is the one who suggested it. She believes a solo trip will be good for me and might give me some guidance on my next steps.

Legion, if there is only one top ten list, I will have disappointed you and the board. God willing, there will be several. At the present I am leaning to Glacier, so pray for me that I am not mauled to death by a grizzly. I hate grizzlies almost as much as bridges.

cgrand, it is a shame we could have not coordinated our trips to coincide. I would have loved climbing with you. We must debrief when our trips have concluded!

Yours,
TulaneLSU

Rent a car and drive across the mountains to Leavenworth. It's a Bavarian styled town in the Cascade mountains. They even have a nutcracker museum which I am certain would thrill you and mother!

ETA: I see you have the Cacades on your schedule. Leavenworth is a must see!

Friend,

Thank you again for this suggestion. I booked my flight, direct through Alaska Air. Round trip was only $238. Even better was I was able to reserve a Porsche or Range Rover at the downtown Enterprise for under $200 for the week. There are some deals in Seattle right now.

Yours,

Friend, look into spending some time in Seattle and then in the Mt Baker/North Cascades area, if you like hiking. There are spectacular areas there, with no real bear worries, and less crowds than Glacier or Rainier.

Drive to the Willowa mountains in Eastern Oregon. Much shorter than driving to Glacier, and it is an area of the country that not many people know much about.

You would basically follow the original Oregon Trail out to eastern Oregon. You could stay overnight in Baker City (there is a good Oregon Trail museum near by). Many good hikes, nearby.

ETA: If driving from Seattle or Portland, the topography change is spectacular. You go from rain forest to high desert (tumbleweeds, gulches, and buttes) right out of a western movie, and back to mountains. I prefer the drive from Portland to Baker City. The first part of the trip from Portland to Hood River, to The Dalles, along the Columbia River Gorge is spectacular.

Yup, one of the more beautiful and unknown places in the NW.

Problem is when hipsters get wind, it will become like every other thing they touch. Enjoy it while its unknown.

Joseph is one of my favorite places on the planet.

I suggest this every time I see one of these because they never come up. I thought Wallace Falls was a good little hike that's gets you picturesque scenery without too much trouble. Wasn't terribly busy.

Afterwards, down the road go eat at Vick's Burger Shack in Sultan with a milkshake. So damn good.
