Either your math or your spending habits are shite. And I do think college costs are generally out of wack.
Sure college costs are out of whack but the OP instead of concentrating on that issue decides to place the blame on boomers. Immediately the legitimate issue is forgotten and he creates enemies right and left instead of finding allies. Won't go far in life with that grievance approach to solving problems.

Phd economics focus on econometrics with emphasis on rural Texas
Current job: convincing poor people to install solar by telling them it saves money when in reality it’s net neutral and can also be more expensive

Key word is live with family. Not a lot of job opportunities in home town
One of them is in IT and works from home; he can live anywhere in the SE as long as he can make it to Tallahassee a few times a year.
Everybody has a different situation, but you know that when you select a college and a major. All of mine went to school with a very good idea of what they wanted to do, what the salary would be like, where the markets are, etc. You keep throwing out excuses like people just wake up with college degrees blind about the outside world.

The degree matters because like you said some are competitive. When you said that, I assumed you were in an engineering or pre-medical type program. I don’t see why living at home 4 years and getting probably a full ride from U of H Victoria was out of the question?

What about the 17 year olds whose parents work at a restaurant? You act like these kids have clear ideas, their world is narrow and not prepared to take on massive debt

Uh v is a terrible school that takes advantage of poor people in port lavaca and point comfort by offering degrees that don’t transfer over to T1 colleges. It’s a waste of money and my AP courses were more valuable than their programs
I have multiple friends from high school who tried this and nobody finished a 4Y program. They all have useless associate degrees

I wouldn’t share your personal business decisions with your colleagues.

I see them all the time; I'm involved with our local technical college. They're learning to weld or work on marine engines, not dropping $120k on a questionable degree.

Why do you need a PhD for this job? It’s an undergraduate degree.

You got a PhD so you could be a solar panel salesman?

You got a PhD in economics to sell solar equipment?
Posted on 7/1/23 at 10:27 am to Sofaking2
I create models used in solar companies for electricity generation for systems and it’s economic factors based on location, timing, and other factors and use that model to forecast vs local utilities.
Not something an undergrad can do without extensive training
I am not a salesman. I am the person who writes the rules for the game

I’m not picking on you. I am very middle class. The military paid for my college and it wasn’t fun.

I don’t mind answering questions as long as it’s valid.

No wonder solar has been such a failure.
